Any time my dogs go out and really get into the dead/dying leaves on the ground, digging after something, they can come back with ticks - even after an ice storm!
Ticks move slower in the really cold temps, but if you get down into their "living space" (deep into leaves generally) during that time, you can still get some on you. So be aware.
I have 3 small dogs, two of which will dig any time, any where and for most any reason! I make sure that they are fully protected from ticks, fleas and other creepy crawlies and always watch for them on them and us, as I live surrounded by trees, deer, mice (the true vector of Lyme) and other little critters that my dogs just love to chase.
In this case, it looks a whole lot more like a good old fashioned ice scrap - with burns!!! OUCH!
