Low thyroid......
Getting diagnosed and treated for hypothyroidism can be just as difficult as Lyme. There is a "Golden Standard", otherwise known as the TSH, that can be the bane of a suffering patient's existence.
It is taught, reinforced, and gleaned the Golden Rule that if your TSH is within the "normal" range that you cannot be hypo. Even if all of your symptoms suggest hypo. (Sound familiar?). It's just like Lyme! You can have all of the symptoms of the disease, but if the lab says negative......you don't have it! Ridiculous!
After providing my husband with a bunch of research I gathered (and one particular paper shared by Cd) I was able to convince him that I should see a top thyroid doctor (not a dumb *** endocrinologist). In the world of thyroid, endocrinologists are just as bad as the Infectious Disease docs in the Lyme world.
Between the world class thyroid doctor and my research papers, my husband felt inspired to help patients by treating for low thyroid even though their labs were normal. He totally went against standard of care! He chose certain patients based on symptoms and gave them armour thyroid. He tried to be on the down low about
it because he shares office space with Endo!! They would not approve!
The effects have been dramatic! about
50% of these people totally regained their health! We are talking about
very sick people! One was diagnosed with MS by a neuro. After just WEEKS on armour, ALL of her symptoms vanished! She was seeing endo before my husband due to a thyroid nodule. So, twice a year she would get ultrasounds by endo. At her endo follow up, they did blood work and saw her TSH was severely suppressed. She had to 'fess up about
my husband giving her armour!
The endo insisted she was NOT hypo, and what my husband was doing was dangerous! ......she could have cardiac issues or osteoporosis. (Which is bunk). They scared her into discontinuing her treatment.
Months later, she literally came crawling back to hubby. Sick as ever. She went back on the armour, and has been 100% healthy since. AND.....she fired endo. .....obviously some feathers are being ruffled at the office.
Another patient is traveling from BOSTON to get treated for hypo by my husband. It really is much like us Lymies having to travel to llmd's.
My point is, none of that was taught in med school. Before I got sick, my husband followed the golden standards. He would have left all of those hypo sick because they had "normal" labs. But the information put out there by medical journals and the Endocrinology Society dictated the standard. Which clearly was faulty.
There are many reasons why you could have a "normal" TSH and still be hypo! Duh!
