Ticks "free falling" from trees? realy?

Without parachutes or wing suites.

OK seriously, do they stay in grass and brush, or actually climb up and jump from trees/higher brush?

I've herd people say this and read it on blogs, but some people will say and believe ANYTHING.

Anyone ever read this from a believable source? Or look up and had to dodge the little critters as they were leaping down?

Actually, I got Lyme while living overseas. I had a bush in my front yard that was crawling with ticks. I know this because I saw them.

I don't know but I do know that we have several trees and vines hanging over our driveway where we park our car in Montauk. I was so careful last summer not to let my then 2 year old brush up against any of the shrubs or grass in our yard and we still found a tick on him. I remember looking suspiciously up at those trees every time we got into our car last summer. The local pest company told me they get people claiming all the time that ticks are falling out of the sky. She said the best she can figure is that they hitch a ride on birds. Who really knows but I will be eyeing those trees again come summertime.

When I was growing up, we were told to be careful walking under trees in the bushes because of ticks. Then years later, the story was...no, they're in the grasses, not the trees. I think the belief of them being in trees was from the fact that people were often finding them in their hair..like AchievingGrace said.

I know for a fact that they jump from trees. I've seen and heard them. I live in the most tick infested wooded area. As I walk through the woods it sounds just like it's starting to rain onto the dead leaves and underbrush. If I stop walking, the "raindrops" decrease. They don't have the best aim if I walk at a uneven pace. Poor little wretched things. If they don't land on a food source (me, my dogs, deer or other creature), back up the tree they go.
I did hear that they can go many years without eating though.

This one is right up my alley since I probably spend more time in the woods than anyone one the forum. Ticks do go up trees, vines, and bushes. They'll get on birds, squirrels, and just about anything else they can attach to.

Yes they do! I've seen them too. It's crazy but we are a highly infested area and no limb is left untouched. Spring just started and my dad already has gotten three ticks in one day of of him as well as my dog. :(

Geez... So much for a nature walk or hike! My thought is they probably attach to birds or like Georgia said squirrels or small animals and then come down.

I thought I read they don't travel very far though so I doubt they are climbing trees from the grass. They only have a few blood meals in their life time so I doubt they would have enough energy to climb up trees and try and drop down on prey and then repeat Everytime they miss... They get up there from small animals that go up there.

Yeah and maybe the wind blows them everywhere. Those deer ticks are so small you can hardly see them, so I'm sure a gust of wind could blow them onto trees.
