Hey all!

I had an appointment with my LLMD today and since my GI symptoms have progressively gotten worse, she has decided to give me a one week antibiotic holiday and then do IM penicillin for 3 weeks. If I'm feeling better at the end of that month, then she will add back in oral antibiotics, but different ones than what I've been taking for the last 3 months.

Just wondering if anybody has had this course of treatment and how it went. She said some people feel great and some feel awful, like most treatments with Lyme & Co.

Yes, I did intramuscular Bicillin for 12 weeks (one shot per week because that is all I could tolerate. It made me very sick when I tried 2x a week.) It did not help me but I hope it will help you!

So, the IM route can make you feel just as bad as oral? I was hoping that I would feel better off oral antibiotics and it would give my body some time to recover since it would just be one antibiotic and not the 3 that I am on now.
My LLMD wrote my prescription for the IM PCN injection every 3 days for 3 weeks. I hope I can tolerate it!
I was really hoping she was going to take me off antibiotics all together at this appointment, but no such luck :(

Thanks for the response sarahm620, anybody else have any experience with IM penicillin or any other medications given intramuscular?

It can make you "feel bad" in that it still makes you herx, yes. It actually made me sick to my stomach from the die-off reaction, which is why we had to take it down to once a week.

If you're going down to one antibiotic rather than three it will probably be easier on your body though! You are obviously stronger than me if you can handle three antibiotics.

I have lots of experience with IM penicillin but not for Lyme. It depends of the dose and it depends how much you keep up your detox. If the doze is not high and doesn't kill a lot of critters, you should be fine. If the doze is high, it will penetrate much deeper than the orals and it will kill more, so you may need to detox more. I don't know why penicillin is not used more in US. It is a good drug but hardly used. You will be ok. I prefer IVs over orals because they do work better but US didn't catch up with that and most likely never will, because orals are what insurance companies use to fill up their pockets super quick while destroying our guts.

Yea, my gut is the biggest problem right now. The only reason she is changing me to IM for a month is to give my gut a chance to recover and rest. So, I really hope that the die off doesn't upset my stomach.

I will definitely make sure to up my detoxing once I start the PCN!!
