Need your opinions on my cardio appointment

Hi all,

I finally had my cardio appointment today. Referring dr (not my llmd) sent me there, amongst other reasons, for my fatigue.

I had to do the bicycle test, ultrasound too.

Am I nuts when I say that these figures are too high to be good?

Before the test: heartrate at 136 bpm - bp 150/110 (sat in the waiting room for 45mins prior to the test)
During the test: heartrate at 180 bpm - bp 220/(forgot)
Small leak on one of the valves (I have this since childhood)
I'm almost 36yo

It wasn't the doctor but an assistant. Said it's 'normal', they see that quite often for a woman my age?
Am I nuts not believing that these figures are normal? I went there, complaining about extreme fatigue and persistant headaches.

Your BP reading is very concerning, but unreliable in a doctors office. You need to test it yourself at various points throughout the day.

Whatever dr I see, I get the same results. Last year I spent two weeks in hospital, and same readings also, 4 times a day at least...

I will get a meter to measure my bp at home from now on.

Get an Omron reader as they are the best for home use.

But ya, those numbers are too high. The diastolic (110) is pretty concerning.

It does see a little high to me-assuming that the blood pressure measurements are the same as in the U.S. Your heart rate seems a little high as well.

For me, my blood pressure gets higher when I'm in more pain than usual or when I'm stressed about the doctor's visit-mostly pain related.

Are they going to put you on something? Or did they discuss it as an option?

It is probably borderline. I would keep an eye on it. Possibly get a second opinion or ask another doc at your next appointment. I would not stress. Definitely look into it.

It does seem somewhat high, especially in light of the bottom number.

Your heart rate is high, too.

To see if that's 'normal' for you check your pulse a few times and see what you get.

The BP numbers are high too. You are young - so not sure why the assistant would make reference to your age.

My pulse is usually between 94 and 112 while resting. It goes considerably up when moving or after eating.

I'm not very worried about it, I'm used to this high bp and heartrate. I've had soooo many doctor's appointments this year, and so many went not well. 3 different specialists actually told me to see a cardiologist because they were worried.
He didn't even think about the headaches possibly being related to this...

Well, it's been like that since long, it won't kill me now rolleyes

Sheesh!! I hate knowing that the doctors seem to be the same everywhere. It's scary that we count on them to know more than we do, even though it seems many times they don't:

"The best evidence indicates that high blood pressure does not cause headaches except perhaps in the case of hypertensive crisis (systolic/top number higher than 180 OR diastolic/bottom number higher than 110)." *I underlined that last part.

For those that are considering the use of L-arginine though, please be aware that it can reactivate EBV and possibly other herpes viruses. It did for me.

MaireLS, Your BP and HR are too high. My cardiologist has me go to the ER with those numbers. He has me on a beta-blocker and if my bp and hr stay that high for longer than an hour I double the beta-blocker. If after another hr it is still high I'm to go to the ER.
I'm really surprised you're Dr is not treating you for this. Please follow up on this.

I'm surprised they did the bicycle test with your HR starting that high, and the diastolic BP that high also. I had to start a beta blocker in 1990 when I was diagnosed, my bp was around 150/89, the heart rate tended to run over 100 and at times would go really fast. It wears you down to run around hypertensive and with tachycardia most of the time. Plus it does your kidneys no favors. I feel better overall when my pressure is lower.

I'll get myself a BP meter next week, and start keeping a diary...

And then I'll go and see a different cardiologist. When I had my PICC installed November last year, the vascular surgeon told me to see a cardiologist. 2 other docs said the same.
I had a high heart rate at age 17 after radiation, but normal BP (always 110/70, until a few years ago, then it went up). They put me on betablockers back then. I could stop them after a year or so.

Sayyadina, this was a cardiologist... but an assistant.
