What kind of stomach problems do others get from Lyme?

I was wondering what kind of stomach issues people get from Lyme and did it get worse with Doxy treatment? Thanks

I haven't had any stomach issues, yet with antibiotics.

But, when I was on doxy, I made sure I ate before taking it. Sometimes on the bottle it says to take on empty stomach...don't do that.
We are a 'special case' - being that we may be on antibiotics for a long time...which means we have to take care of our stomachs.
It's not so bad taking an antibiotic on an empty stomach for a week to 10 days...but when we are on them for months....it can do damage.

so, have you been taking it with food?

Yes I've been taking it with food, but my stomach was bad prior to starting the Doxy. I had nausea and loose stools with stomach upset. Since starting Doxy it has gotten much worse. I do have mild crohns but my doctor said that is not the cause of all this and my ID doc says the Doxy shouldn't be causing me so much stomach upset and loose stools, so idk what to think or do.

All my Lyme problems started with digestive issues. Prior to my Lyme diagnosis, I was diagnosed with GERD, IBS and gastritis. I had diarrhea, constipation, and abdominal pain. I wasn't on doxy but I was instead on amoxicilian. I always had it during a meal and took some form of probiotic a couple hours afterward. I also take betaine and pepsin along with digestive enzymes because another one of my issues was low stomach acid, which is a common problems for those of us with Lyme. A diet change has helped alot too. No diary, no gluten, no sugar, which is good for both lyme and digestive issues. Whole foods and lots of vegetables, plenty of water. I also take a product called glutagenics that has aloe, DGL and glutamine, that helped with a lot of my pain.

I will try to find my previous posts about my gastric distress. Long story short, Bartonella was causing MANY GI problems that got a little better as tx has evolved.

Are you taking high doses of probiotics and/or antifungals and implementing a diet FREE of sugar/simple carb/dairy/processed foods?

AGREE w/ cheetah about low acid levels.

First of all your id doc was wrong. your chrons, which is inflammatory bowel, can cause all those intestinal issue, and doxy being antibiotic wipes out your beneficial natural floral(bacteria), and allow diarrhea or fungal pathogens to take hold, and cause all those symptoms. I think its the chron on top of the abx treatment you are doing.

In a nutshell, I would have severe upper intestinal cramping all throughout my torso once a month, that would start in the middle of the night and last for hours and end in projectile vomiting. No episodes could be tied to foods or meds or any external force. I ends dup in the ER Christmas eve these got so bad. ER doc dx gall stones.

My gastroenterologist, who is also an integrative specialist who has many lyme patients, feels strongly that my gastric episodes are not entirely related to gallstones. Due to the 4 to 6 wk cycle, he deemed it to be some sort of a Bart lifecycle. Razzle's article below references "palsy of the gut", which fits my episodes perfectly. And in support of that, I have not had any episodes since February, which is the longest I've gone w/out them so I think the abx have helped, even though I stopped my Bart herbs back in Feb.

Also, Burrascano has said that IV Rocephin suppresses Bart.

Be aware also that parasites, Lyme and many other chronic infections can mimic Crohn's - and make the biopsies look like Crohn's.

I was dx w/ Crohn's-Colitis as a teen, but found out later that it was the amebic parasite that I was also dx w/ at the time that was the cause of the fistula and all the symptoms I was having. Getting rid of the amebic infection stopped all the symptoms of the "Crohn's" and the symptoms have never returned since.

I now deal primarily with motility issues and nonspecific inflammation throughout my gut - thought to be largely caused by Lyme, Bartonella, and food & environmental allergies.
