Be honest- how bad do IM abx injections hurt?

My doc wants me to take abx a different way than oral. He doesn't want them going through my digestive system. I don't want the hassle of a picc.

Do they hurt as bad as people say or are they just wimps? I've heard they are the most painful shot known to man. I've heard them be called peanut butter shots. Ah!!

Why worry about it? You have so much pain already, it will probably be a drop in the bucket.

They're brief, so it shouldn't matter that much.

Have them done in the butt; that's the best place.

I know someone who gives herself Rocephin injections in the butt; she didn't seem to think it was that big a deal.

You've dealt with so many things; I'm sure you can deal with this.

I did a month of IM Tazicef, rotating between my thighs and glutes. My husband did the left gluteus. The rest I could manage. The injections weren't bad because the diluent had local anesthetic in it. Right now I'm doing bee sting therapy which hurts a whole lot more, but seems to be helping more too. Good luck. It gets easier when you start to feel confident after a couple of shots.

It is really nice to bypass the gut.

It hurts, but you'll get used to it. It hurts like a flu shot. I did Bicillin.

Lol! My doctor said "for a girl that has her intestines tied in knots, a bladder that has open sores that have been bleeding for over a year, and a swollen brain this should be easy for you!"

I did b12 shots for a couple months and got knots so hard the last time my guy tried to stick me the needle wouldn't even go in. We switched spots every time and for some reason my body decided to be dramatic about it. If a b12 shot gives me knots like that I figure abx will do about the same. They are still there, it's like my body made scar tissue in response to the shots or something?! Very strange!

I did not have a reaction like that. You got knots where he was injecting them? You're supposed to massage the area to keep that from happening, I think...

I did IM rocephin injections into my thigh for 2 months. They definitely aren't pleasant and it's obviously much easier to take a pill but it honestly isn't that bad. The needle looks intimidating but it doesn't hurt that bad going in if you use lidocaine or another localized anesthetic with it.

One thing I would recommend is watching a couple youtube videos about Gluteal and Thigh IM injections. There are certain places, especially in the gluteal muscle, that have major nerves running through them so be careful! Hopefully your doc will show you how or have a nurse show you.

I always massaged them and he was actually pretty good at it. I sat on my heating pad after too once I started noticing how much my body hated it. The knots are much smaller now a few months later. But it's weird that they are still there. I was worried may even they were going into the wrong spot but it would be impossible to get a bad spot every single time. Sooo.... ya.

My body is just a drama queen apparently. It didn't hurt very much at first, but after the first month every 3 days they started hurting worse every time. Lame!!
