You're right, it's all pretty much a guessing game, but there are things you can do to help you decide what's needed.
There is definitely a lot more that you could add to your detox routine - and that is the only way to know if you are herxing.
When I treated, I had a pattern that my body followed. 3 weeks in and I herxed for 3 weeks. If I did all I could to detox - oil pulling, dry skin brushing, lymph massages, detox foot soaks (the full baths were too much for me), activated charcoal, at least 64 ounces of water a day, making sure that my bowels moved daily, taking ALA, and whatever exercise level I could tolerate - if I did all those things, I could get ahead of the toxins again and could finish out my treatments without being miserable - but I had to continue to do all I could to detox or those symptoms would come flooding back in and I would be miserable - and bedridden.
The other possibility is that there are a few people have seen that their first symptoms to be seen are the last ones to leave. I would want to see if I could alleviate symptoms rather than just see if I could ride them out though.
