anesthesia and lyme disease

I have re-occurring Lyme disease. Quick background. Diagnosed in June 2005 four days after tick bite, had 2 standard treatment series of doxycyclene (for however long you were allowed to take it back then), had some severe herx reactions in the joints and everything was fine and dandy. Slowly over the next three years got symptoms I suspected were Lyme. Doctor would not even consider it, even though the doctor who diagnosed me was in his practice (she had quit at the time I needed her) and told me it could pop up again. In fact her very words were "If any disease and I mean any disease, anything you get in the future does not respond to treatment, tell them you have Lyme disease." I had horrible fatigue, brain fog, brain swelling, creepy crawly, feeling in my brain and a regular sampler platter of way-out-there neurological diseases that would only last a few minutes each. The one thing I did NOT have was joint pain. So, I did not have any Lyme symptoms. Did research on the internet, found a doctor about 3 hours from my home started treatment for yeast overgrowth and decided against the antibiotics. I decided to try the homeopathic stuff from another country, no antibiotic treatment other than the initial treatments. Took 18 months before got off the hardcore, life consuming treatment protocols and started having a pretty normal life with some maintenance stuff to keep it at bay. Had a little over a year of symptom free living, good energy level, none of the other crazy stuff. Started drifting to the high carb diet and cut back on the weight lifting and early 2014 symptoms started coming back. Back to diet and doing the light machine thing and took the bee venom. Having pretty good results but, I have had a surgery on my hip (just some cleaning up of a tendon tear and bursa sack) and it repeatedly gets re-injured doing regular movements. That's another post, I guess.

So, the reason of my post is to inform any Lyme suffers that I had very good luck with a certain concoction of anesthetics. I kept harping on my concern about the anesthetics they were going to use for the surgery with my Lyme disease. I read horror stories of people having symptoms coming back much worse than before, even when their symptoms were dormant, because of the anesthetics that were used on them.

According to my anesthesia record these were the ones that were checked: Sev-sevoflurane, Prop-I couldn't read the doctor's handwriting on this one for the full name. I see the doctor on July 23, 2014. I will ask him to spell it again but, "prop" is the abbreviation on the record. Fent-fentanyl and Roc-rocuronium. Hope this helps someone. I could not find any information on that other than a medical article in a medical journal that I could not make heads or tails of. I printed it and gave it to the anesthesiologist in the pre-op room.

I have had 2 surgeries since in lyme treatment with no issues.

I am curious to know where you learned about Lyme patients relapsing following surgery with traditional anesthesia. This has happened to me multiple times, but the last was by far the worst. I became deathly ill about a week after the surgery, and I have been sick ever since (for 3 1/2 years).

Now, I need to have major surgery, again, and I am utterly terrified at the thought. Doctors don't believe me when I tell them that the anesthesia WILL make me chronically ill. I nearly lost my life after the last surgery, as my heart was severely affected along with my thyroid and almost every other organ in my body. I was left in a state of extreme chronic pain (so severe, I passed out on a regular basis), and I have had a fever for three years (Babesiosis).

I need to find some people with this problem who have found a solution.

After I had surgery to remove my gall bladder, I had what the E.R. docs said was metabolic syndrome. The anesthesia caused my electrolytes to drop dangerously low which resulted in cardiac arrhythmia. I also had a bad reaction from the ' twilight sleep' given for endoscope and colonoscopy(done same appt); anyhoo, I do NOT do well w/anesthesia at all and I hope and pray I never have to have surgery again!

My daughter had to have an emergency appendectomy several years before she was diagnosed with Lyme and I was so scared when they wheeled her off to the operating room, worried about the anesthetic and other things. Thankfully, she came through it fine. She was feeling pretty good when we went to see her, alert and happy. She had relief from her chronic pain, so that's why she felt better, but she didn't want to fill the prescription for pain pills once she was home, knowing the problems they could create.

IHL - specific to your case and anyone with histamine intolerance - there is a section in that link above that you should read if you consider or need surgery.

And not to scare anyone, but this is something we have to be aware of. I just had major dental surgery (for those that don't know - 3 titanium posts were installed into my front lower jaw), and although I didn't need to be in the ICU for pain management, I did have extremely high pain levels after wards - and still have very increased levels of pain - 2.5 weeks after surgery - but most of it is now contained in my chin area until something cold or hot hits one of those posts! It will raise the hair on anyone's head, let me tell you!! LOL!
