I had to use larger doses of Xanax for a year before I could wean off of them. I would find a doctor that understand this better, though. Those meds are no different than using crutches when you break your leg - for short term use. And when used as prescribed and only for short term, they are safe. This doc has no understanding of what it's like to have a panic attack if they refuse to prescribe something for those that need them.
Is there another doctor that you see that you can get some anti-anxiety meds from? A GP? And, I've found if I ask for the type of med, not the med I'm thinking of (anti-anxiety med, not Xanax or whatever), I'm' much better received by the doc, unless they've actually taken the time to get to know me a bit and then they know that I surely wouldn't be asking if I wasn't in desperate need.
If you don't have any other doc's to turn to, do you have insurance? If so, get a Primary care doc to help you with these things. If you are using the meds short term, in order to literally prop up your body's functioning until you can lower the level of infection, you are only helping your body to heal faster and better.
And, if all else fails, please take a look at some natural alternatives. It would definitely be better than just living through those panic attacks!!
