***RESULTS JUST IN**** Coinfection testing question

Someone kindly posted that co-infection tests have high false negatives. So.....what about specificity? If you get a positive result for a co-infection, could there be a cross reacting organism...or is the test very specific to the co-infecting organism?

I believe they are very specific to a certain strain...say babesia microti is tested for, but you have babesia duncani...it would come back negative... i believe there are 100 or so strains of babesia alone. Blood smears are also used for testing. This is just going off what i've read and it may not be totally accurate...

Yes my LLD said the same thing. He specifically said there are 100 types of I think it was babesia, but the labs usually only test for 1, although he's found a lab that is twice as good and will test for 2. Im not sure that true, just what he told me this week. Frustrating to say the least.

If you get a positive, it's a positive. They're accurate in that way.

I finallyyyyyt got co-infection results from Igenex!

Babesia FISH (RNA) positive

B. ducani IFA IGM 80 (active infection)
B. ducani IFA IGG 40 (may or may not be active)

B. microti IFA IGM 20 (may or may not be active)
B. microti IFA IGG <40 negative

B. henselae IFA IGM <20 negative
B. henselae IFA IGG 80 (may or may not be active)

HGA IGM/IGG negative
HME IGM/IGG negative

Thoughts??
