I have had Lyme for 24 years and have seen many people get a picc line and not ultimately get better. My doctor recommended that I get the picc but I refused since I have heard that many on piccs had to get their gallbladders removed..!! No thanks...
But I would do the PICC if I had MS symptoms or other very severe neurological symptoms. I just have arthritis and major fatigue, with a bit of brain fog. In short, I am at 65% of what I was pre-lyme.
Straight antibiotics DO NOT cure chronic Lyme because borrelia has so many different forms--motile spirochetes, cysts, intracellular form, string of pearls, bleb, etc. A better approach would be to pulse your doctors choice of antibiotics 5 days ON, 3 days OFF for at least FOUR ON-OFF cycles. Pulsing this way has been shown to work by a recent clinical study, because it kills a wave of live spirochetes, while forcing some into cysts. During the three day "rest" the cysts pop out into live spirochetes only to meet their maker when they are hit with the second pulsed wave of antibiotics again.
Doing this four times cleans them out fairly effectively, according to the study, but probably doesn't address those cysts that are burrowed deep into tissue-- and I have no idea if it addresses the L form-- or intracellular form of Lyme. Red blood cells live for about 3-4 months, and both motile spirochetes and L-forms of Lyme live INSIDE red cells(intracellularly), so its logical that a treatment program should outlive red blood cells-- to fully clean up. One guy I talked to with a darkfield microscope said that he always looked at his live red blood cells for several hours, and as they were dying, he'd see spirochetes fleeing the red blood cells!! LOL....
Dr. Eva Sapi has even proven that some antibiotics cause a drastic increase in the cyst form of Lyme... while they eradicate the spiral form temporarily. Doxy alone dramatically increases cysts, according to Sapi.... This does you no good when you stop the Doxy, because the cysts just pop out again into live spirochetes. The cysts are viable for 18 months and can remain dormant that long, according to the Brorsons' research. Dr. Sapi showed scientifically that both Banderol and Samento (cats claw) drastically reduced the sizes of the living lyme biofilm colonies. SAmento shrank the whole biofilm matrix down while leaving a few live spirochetes inside, while Banderol killed all spirochetes, while leaving the biofilm matrix shell behind. Her photos of dead spirochetes in biofilm matrices are very interesting.
Buhner favors the following herbs in this order: 1Japanese Knotweed, 2)Cats Claw (samento), 3)Eleuthero, followed by 4)andrographis if you can tolerate it, and 5)Stephania, . I developed an annoying heart palpitation while on Samento , so now I take a relative of Samento which is 1-2 ounces of Noni juice per day. Some have said that Noni is excellent over the long term at slowly reducing the intracellular infection. (In very rare instances too much Noni can apparently cause unproven cases of liver damage, though.
I'd start with inexpensive Knotweed, inexpensive Cats Claw tincture and add in Eleuthero, andrographis, and stephania, as Buhner suggests--- but Im not a doctor so I can't advise you. These are all available on Amazon, and are not all that expensive. Also, Id get a green powder with probiotics to help in detoxfication as the bacteria die- they release toxins.
For me it was just not worth doing an expensive, unproven picc line. I did two years of amoxicillin, and I did NOT get better permanently.
Now I just do herbals-- I have had major luck in reducing the arthritis with a combination of Olive Leaf extract 3 times a day,Monolaurin(2-3 scoops), Sarsaparilla tincture(30 drops in soda water), Banderol tincture, Boron drops, Turmeric, Methyl B12 with L-5-MTHF--this greatly aids in detoxification and really brightens my mood!!) with a green detox powder every day. I also take MSM at least three times a week which greatly helps my skin lesions. Artemisinin has helped with skin lesions, also. I have ordered the Knotweed and Eleuthero from Amazon, as per Buhner, and I am also taking a regimen including 40 drops of Houttuynia for Bartonella even though I tested negative for everything. (I do see bartonella-like scratches which makes me believe I have it) I plan to take the Houttuynia for a year-- and I bought a pound of the raw Houttuynia herb so that i can make capsules really cheaply.
Apparently its really hard to get rid of Lyme if you have not addressed the Bartonella first. Bartonella down-regulates the immune system, giving Lyme an advantage, and it can engage in horizontal gene transfer within a biofilm colony that includes borrelia, so it is important to get rid of immune suppressing Bartonella!! Oh I also take inexpensive Bromelain- 1 gram daily as a biofilm buster.. I also do take Apple cider vinegar (Bragg) often, as the malice acid also busts up biofilms.
Anyway, I know its a lot, but its actually fun when one of the supplements actually works-- I think Olive Leaf and Monolaurin, and possibly the Boron supplement have been a very good combo for me for the arthritis in knees and shoulders.
