My protocol for Candida/Yeast overgrowth

HI, so I have been treating yeast for about 2 months, but over the last 2 weeks I am following a strict protocol including,
*strict diet
*yeast pills from doc every other day
*garlic pills from doc every other day
*Diflucan 3 times per week for a month
*Nystatin pure powder, 2 1/2 tsp per day for over 2 months now
*probiotics daily

My question is my pharmacy has told me that they may be out of the powder starting next week. I have enough powder to get me thru 7 more days. Do I .....
-Stop the powder after next week
-cut my maintenance dose in half, by the time I am out, my pharmacy will have more (I hope)
-Search for a new place to get the powder. (I really don't want to do this. I have been on this powder for a while and really would like to stop).

Hopefully you guys have some good suggestions. I thought I was feeling better, but of coarse, I am not sure. Never sure. So frustrating. I am confident I have killed the yeast in my GI system, but I have it systemically for sure. My next doctors appointment is not until the 28th. I have e-mailed him, but I am not totally confident in his treatment and want other opinions.

Also, I have been on this diet for 15 days and have lost 8 pounds. I have some reserve, but I sure don't want to keep losing at this pace. Boy does this suck!

The only abx I am on at the current time is a tea my TCM makes me.

the hansa center makes a great and unique formula for dealing with yeast. It helped me and others I know a lot. Also, if you use that plus supplement called molybdenum works great

That is interesting about the nystatin. I am currently doing the swish and swallow four times a day. A teaspoon each dose. I find it very helpful. I feel like a kid with the "fake banana" taste to the nystatin, but I think it helps.

Also, no sugar no carbs. I also do flucanazone every other day. The nystatin isn't meant to be long term.

Purple Tulip, do you mean that your Nystatin tastes like a fake banana? If so, you need to get the pure form. If yours tastes like banana, it has added sugar.

Yeah. I've always wondered that. But I figure it's killing off all kinds of stuff. And the amount would be very small. I'm going to ask the pharmacist.

By the way, it's worked every time. I healed yeast in the lining of my stomach as well as PVCs.

Well, one good thing is that it tastes good. The pure powder tastes absolutely terrible!

This diet is killing me. I don't really want any food at all after 1 week of only meat eggs and a few veggies. I lost 5 pounds this week, which is ok, but if that means I will loose another 8 in the next 2 weeks, that is not really all that great.

Good luck to you on your yeast challenge.

From the yeast? I was seeing a cardiologist for the heart irregularities, PVCs, that we're keeping me up half the night. Then I started getting a burning on my stomach on the same place. My doctor put me on nystatin for a month and the burning stopped and so did the heart palps. The cardiologist and doc agreed that a systemic yeast infection was causing stress on my body and they stopped after the nystatin.

That was a year ago. I went back on treatment for lyme march 2nd and have been doing the no sugar diet. I cheated for my son's wedding. The next week I started to get the burning again. And a few palps. I've been back on nystatin a week and the burning has ceased.

I completely understand your weight concerns, I am going through that as well. Since I got sick I have lost 20 pounds (I was skinny before all of this). I am not sure if it is the change in diet, lyme or something else (appears that my adrenals and thyroid are okay). This is definetly my biggest concern as I can't afford to lose anymore. My LLND said I need to get back into eat whole grains, brown rice and quinoa. I guess she mentioned some people when they drastically cut their diet will lose significant amounts of weight which is never a good thing.

I went on vacation last week and I wanted to see how much weight I could gain, so I was eating everything and then some. I actually put on 3 - 4 pounds which for me is a huge win. I just now need to figure out how I can keep the weight going up while adhering to a strict diet to combat Candida and Lyme.

Wow wonderwhatsnext, good luck on gaining weight while sticking to the Candida diet. I feel like I am shoving food down my throat. Nothing tastes good and it feels like it sits in my stomach. I can't wait for phase 2 of this diet. I hope to include gut building foods like home made yogurt. That has no sugar and lots of good bacteria. oh how I would love a little yogurt. I make it myself out of whole milk. I cook it for 24 hours in my yogurt maker. I can use whole whipping cream to make it really full of fat. Yum, cant wait!

well, my doctor said that I need to stay on the Nystatin Powder for now so I have to search for another way to get it. Bummer.

Sorry you are going through a tough phase. I don't have a lot to add for the diet—I would focus on high fat content foods like avocados and sweet potatoes and brown rice will help when you get to that stage.

Let me know if you need another source of the powder.

What are the "yeast pills" your doc is giving you?

And I apologize if we've already been over this but if you haven't done a stool test like Doctor's Data that indicates which antifungals are effective/ineffective for the type of yeast it indicates (and it can miss a lot), then I'd switch from Diflucan to Ketoconazole or another type of systemic anti fungal.

HI, well I have been on this diet for a month today. I was improving slowly and then my son started getting scary sick. We ended up in the ER last Monday. He has acute Lyme disease. Bitten around the 26th of July. It was a very stressful week. He was in so much pain that he could not walk. His foot was hot, puffy and red. It was horrible. We had him on IV abx for 5 days and now he is on doxy at 300mg per day. He is almost all better and improving daily! Whew.

So as of Thursday a lot of my symptoms came back. My guess is that it is because of stress that raised my blood sugar because I did not cheat on the diet. Now I feel like I am at the beginning of the month and not the end. I've lost 10lbs and this diet my doctor has me on is overly restrictive and tanking my immune system. I've had a cold for about 18 days now.

I have been on Diflucan 3 days per week for 4 weeks now.

I see my doctor Friday, but I can tell you I am done with this! I have another practitioner that I am seeing. I was not sure if I should go with her or my doctor. Well I went with my doctor for a month and feel like I have lost all of the ground I gained. I am going to switch to the practitioner. I may still switch to a different anti fungal, but I am not sure. I may go with just the practitioner and give her a chance.

It is all so confusing and I know that this diet I am on has pushed my immune system way down. I am pretty frustrated at this point.

At the beginning of this treatment I was feeling better by doing what the practitioner was doing for me. Then I said I'd give my doc one more chance and I did. I feel like I have gone backwards and I am eating way to much protein.

If I go with my practitioner and end up worse or in the same boat, I will have to cross that bridge when I get there.

Poor little guy!!! What a horrible situation. I am so glad he's doing better.

Yes, sounds like your immune system is overwhelmed.

Are you still taking abx or tinctures w/ alcohol? If so, they alone will create an opportunistic environment for yeast/fungal overgrowth. Regardless of what you're eating. I'd start switching up your probiotic and take AT LEAST 400 billion a day. I take 800 billion on the days I infuse and much less on my off days.

I don't know if that was helpful—I can troubleshoot some more with you if you like but I know you have a lot going on. But you do need to remember to take care of yourself so that your son has someone to take care of him. ;) Moms are heroes but we need them to take care of themselves, too.

Thanks for the response. I am taking a tea that I make with herbs. I have absolutely NO alcohol.

I so thought I was getting better and then the stress and then the symptoms started again. I am back to getting that lump in my throat after a meal, especially after dinner. I am burping again, ticking again, joint pain again. It really sucks after I tried so hard.

I am sick of taking pharmacuticals from my doctor. I have been going to this doctor for 10 months and I am second guessing him again.

So I have an appointment with practitioner (Sara) on Wednesday and with Doctor on Friday. I am pretty sure I am going to ditch all the pharmacuticals and go the completely natural way with Sara starting Friday. I am not normally someone who gives up, but I told myself I would give doctor a month and if not improved go back to Sara.

I have switched probiotics and added others too. I mean I guess I am a little better, but still there are symptoms. I am worried that my doctor has let my immune system tank enough to let the Lyme back in. He keeps saying that I am "healed" from the Lyme and that is not an issue any longer. I don't buy that!

If I don't improve with Sara I will have to figure that out then. The fact is I did improve with her and was to a point of symptom free. Then the test came back positive for Candida and I stopped her treatment and went with doctor. Now symptoms are back anyway.

I am so done with this protein and a hand full of veggies diet. It is gross. I have read other Candida diets and my doctors is over the top! I will work on rebuilding my gut now.

OK… anxious to hear how things go with Sara. You definitely need to shift things.

Rebuilding the gut is ALWAYS step #1. So you're definitely on the right track.

It's possible that you're cycling through another stage of the killing process, which causes flares. It's confusing because you think you're sliding backwards but in fact, you've just reached a new pocket of the infection and your body is reacting to the die off… talk w/ Sara about that possibility and see what she thinks.

BTW, the pure nystatin powder IS all-natural. It's derived from a type of mold from the earth. So, whether you need to literally stop your entire protocol and reset and rebuild one by one so you know what is or isn't working...or from a psychological standpoint you just need to stop everything synthetic, I wanted to reiterate that it is all-natural.

Thanks Pirouette, So how long do you think I need to be on the Nystatin?

My Pharmacy can no longer get it, which means even if I find it else where, I won't get it for my co-pay of $10.00. I am going broke, seriously! I don't want to keep taking it.

This is all so complicated and frustrating. Then to add in what has happened to my son and the financial burden I am putting on my family. I am so ready to throw in the towel and just live with what ever it is I have to live with.

I just don't want to loose any ground that I have gained over the last month. I really have to pick who I am going to go with, Doc or Sara, I literally cannot do both and if I try I am just throwing money away.

What if I did just reach another "pocket of infection"? or what if the Diflucan is not the type of anti fungal I need and switching will be the "right" choice?

I really don't know what to do.

It is. It is infuriatingly complex and it's too much for regular people to handle, much less people who ARE SICK and certainly, too much for mothers who are dealing with a crisis w/ her child.

I think it will be very good to meet w/ Sara and just talk. Try to organize your thoughts a little bit in advance, try to write a succinct summary of the past 6 months or so—keep it short and organized. Clearly identify 3 things that you are there to see her about. And if you can, it would be great if you could just bring someone with you—to help you keep track of info and also as support.

The more I think about it, the more you sound frazzled and exhausted and in a heap of stress… you WILL get through this absolutely insane stage. But you've been in "fight or flight" mode with your son's crisis so now your body is crashing. It's normal and what you're feeling might just be from the adrenals wearing down, the body processing cortisol surge and may not have a whole lot to do with the lyme infection, other than stirring things up. So, I would not focus too much on the possibility that your treatment isn't working, and maybe it's more of an issue that the stress has just worn you down.

It's really good to focus on your gut but sounds like you also need to focus on engaging your sympathetic system in bringing your stress and anxiety levels down several notches. This is not easy—it takes considerable effort, literally forcing yourself to relax and decompress. There are great "breathing" exercises on youtube that will help you do this. Meditation is critical right now. Sleep, even moreso.

Maybe others have some suggestions… hang in there. The worst with your baby is over and now it's time to focus on you!

Thanks P, Sara does muscle testing which is directly connected with the sympathetic system. She will test my adrenals. they were testing well a few weeks ago, but I bet they will not be doing so good this time. I am getting very fatigued mid day again. This symptom was also resolved and is now back.

I would like to know you thoughts on quitting the Nystatin. I could slowly decrease or just stop. Not sure which, but I am sure I want to stop using it, at least in the amount I am using now.

how do you know you have healed yeast in the lining of your stomach?

i just started actively addressing candida by means other than meds. just trying to get a good feel for what to do and what works. Thanks!

and dancing bear, as far as the diet goes - did you avoid red potatoes and jasmine rice too? i just can't imagine how I won't be hungry avoiding carbs altogether!! i just started today, and it sure isn't easy! also, is it true that goat's and sheep's milk is ok? bc i am trying to figure out if i can have feta cheese. also, alot of websites say cottage cheese is ok - do you know? bc thats a great source of protein!!

I was on the anti-lyme diet for months, but never gave up cheese. Cheese and rice will be so hard for me to give up, but I gotta do the right thing bc i already took diflucan for long enough, gotta do this with herbs and diet the rest of the way! unless i decide to add in nystatin.....

You should avoid potatoes and rice until you have healed for awhile. And only then do you slowly introduce them.

Any milk has sugar in it. No cheese. There are cheese alternatives in the health food stores.

thats the thing - i went on several websites and some say certain foods are ok and others do not. i will follow the websites you quoted, thanks!!!

what does everyone do when they are hungry?? also, i will get severely constipated if i eat protein all of the time and no fruit! LOL

and i dont like eating eggs without cheese (scrambled, omlets, etc). i read that goat and sheep cheese are ok on many websites but that if you need to give in to any cheese, extra sharp white cheddar has only trace amounts of lactose, which is the problem with dairy, bc lactose converts to sugar. i can eat eggs with bacon but then my cholesterol will go up too high!! LOL
