Hi, my son tolerated his two weeks in on the antibiotic clarithromycin. He is supposed to add ceftin in starting today. He has asked if I think it's ok to postpone the cftin to start this coming mon instead of today.
How bad would that be...

he told me his plans to attend some pre college get togethers with his friends this week and his concerns would be having some alcohol while being on ceftin and clarithromycin.

I know the best answer would be to refrain altogether but realistically I know if he goes, there will be at least be a little indulgence.

Thanks for any thoughts.

I would just tell him to be careful. If he postpones the antibiotic, that's just delaying the healing. If he drinks while taking the abx he just needs to be careful to see how he reacts- it may intensify the Lyme symptoms or make the abx not work as well.

For many, alcohol will bring on strong enough symptoms that they won't do it often! LOL! While I too would say that it's best to refrain, some alcohol use won't interfere with the effectiveness of Clarithromycin according to several sites.

Can you convince him to only have 1 or 2? That would be a good compromise.

Hi Trav...he does notice that a bit alcohol does exacerbate his joint pain but still tolerable. He has agreed in past to stick to one or two and he has stuck to his word...he's pretty open and honest with us.
And maybe that's why he doesn't overdo it, he had felt his joint pain the next day after one or two.


I think Ill just tell him to stick to moderation and emphasize the importance of that. I just don't know if I can convince him to start the ceftin today which really bothers me. His instinct says to wait till Monday, mine is the opposite.

I really believe you have to let him feel normal for a day or two. Let him hang out with his friends and feel a part of things. That's healing for his mind and soul.

The alcohol is toxic for him and he will feel that and it will only help reinforce why he needs to stick to treatment.

Thank you Jrpsf, well said, on both points. He was supposed to leave for college out of our city tomorrow...and he and I and his dad, along with his nurse practioner felt he shouldn't this year. As much as he seems to be handling things, I do want him to feel as normal as he can. Thanks again.

Set aside times for him to take breaks when his friends come home at Thanksgiving and Christmas. If you do that now maybe he will treat full steam between now and then. My kids are a little older, but I honestly couldn't imagine.
