Oh dear. H is in bad pain. Last night thumb and index finger started to get red and inflamed and hurt -- today it is much worse and seems to be spreading on her hands. Almost looks like a burn.
She is on doxy (200X2) for over 2 weeks now
250 Azithromycin per day
And flaygyl on Sat. and Sunday.
Could this be from the week-end dose of flagyl?
From the doxy if she was not careful with sun?
She has bartonella - my hunch (only a hunch) is that is what this could be . . . should she skip a dose of azithro?
Very grateful for your thoughts on
1) what this could be
2) how to deal with pain
(baking soda paste to cool it? ice? pain killers?)
Thanks!

I just started doxy and I guess I wasn't careful enough outside (even though I was in the shade). I have a lot of burning in the areas where I got too much sun. And, I also have burning/tingling in my hands - which gets worse when my hands get wet or I am cold. Now, I can't handle any sun at all or my skin feels like it is on fire.

Some people can have a skin rash from Candida that has that burning feeling, and I've talked with others that have had burning skin as a symptom to their infections.
What you need to determine is if it's a Neuro symptom, of it it's her skin that is actually "broken", as in with a rash. Some coconut oil may be helpful, or could actually burn, so she can try that on a small part of the affected area.

Thanks everyone -- so worried for her!
She is going to call the doctor first thing in the am. This doc is not the 'on call' type . .
The pictures show the skin as very red and inflamed. She said it feels like a 3rd degree burn.
I went through a lot of old posts and many seem to have had burning hands and feet with both lyme and bart . . .
But Traveler, the yeast theory is interesting. She is doing nystatin daily and diflucan 3x week.
When I suggested sun burn, she wondered why it would only be on the hands . . . maybe because they get more exposure?
She has been back at the *** cottage where she got bit and where I am sure there is mold too.
It is hard to be so involved, but NOT be the parent -- though at 20, not sure she always listens to her parents . .
Thanks again!

When I was taking doxy in July 2014, I put sunscreen on and drove downtown - 10 minutes there and in a store and 10 minutes drive back.
The backs of both hands were red - burned in that short time.
This summer I took minocycline and havent had the same problem.

That's funny, Girlie, as I know that you have very pale skin like me and yet I burned like that on Mino!!
Trishums, I hope that she finds out what this is quickly and can get it resolved!

I was concerned about
Mino, Trav...but it was okay. I was also concerned about
turning into a Smurf - my LLND said to stop the mino if i got blue spots on my skin, and if my gums turned blue...
I was still careful with the sun - but was certainly exposed for 10 minutes or more a few times (with sunscreen) and never burned like I did with doxy.

I would have made one funny looking smurf!!!

Thanks for the input, everybody. H will call the doctor in the am.
She is in pain, I'm afraid.
Any of the theories suggested here makes sense to me . . . she says there are no "bumps" or eruptions on the skin, Traveler.
Girlie, I am sorry about
your sunburn!
I think I am secretly hoping that it is "only" sunburn -- yes it is awful, but maybe that is easier to deal with than deep neurological issues . . . .
Oy!
Thanks,
T.

Lavender oil-a high quality product. It's antiseptic, antibiotic, and soothing!
@ least it was for me when I'd had a strange rash on my left forearm!

You have to stay out of the sun while on Doxy.

Hi everyone,
The good news is that H's hands seem to be improving today -- still red and sore and burning, but the area is smaller and I think it is feeling better. So trend is friend? She was well enough to try a new recipe!
Thanks again for suggestions and input last night.
She did not call her doctor since she said it was improving . . . she is 20 and I can only advise and encourage!
Dancingbear, overall, I think there have been some improvements since starting abx 2.5 weeks ago. Energy is good (it had been awful), headaches less intense, clearer mind, less crying, hip pain less intense . . but she still has a lot of symptoms . . .
She has decided to try to take some courses this fall. (3rd year university) I strongly advised against -- I said 2 online would be a lot! -- but I am not sure how much she is going to try to do. Again, I am not the parent, just the (still very worried) aunt . . . .
I am afraid she is going to overdo it and crash and make things more complicated.
Please keep her in your prayers!
How is Billy doing? I hope he continues to improve!
T.
