Flagyl worry / tinidazole

Hi, so my 18 year old son will be adding oral flagl to his clarithromycin and ceftin starting Mon or tues...I've read it's hard on liver, I could give milk thistle to protect liver. Has anyone had any experience with flagyl
or should I have told np it makes me nervous to use and asked for tinizadole, and any experience with that abx? Thanks

Honestly, craymom....no matter what your son's treatment, he will benefit from milk thistle throughout (as long as he doesn't have a ragweed allergy).

There are just soooo many toxins that the liver has to clear during treatment that it just makes sense to support it.

I defer to other members about the meds.

Craymom - I don't know if tinidazole would be any easier on the liver. I was on Ceftin and pulsing tinidazole when my liver enzymes went out of healthy range...so was forced to take an antibiotic break.

Your son is 18, and his liver is most likely healthier than my old liver. Make sure you do have him taking milk thistle to help, and lots of detoxing...as the liver is a big player of eliminating the toxins.

Milk Thistle actually raised my ALTs/ASTs. . .

Tinidazole has been somewhat liver-friendly for me. Just get labs checked every 3 weeks or so.

Also, for what it is worth, my liver enzymes did not go down until I treated asymptomatic Babesia.

thanks CD3764 and Girlie. Well guess w will just go with the Flagyl and keep an eye on things. Stressful thinking of him on all these abx at once, but more stressful thinking if he wasnt. I asked his GP doc to order liver enzymes to keep an eye on it...i worry. Maybe after a week or two he'll go for the blood work, and the beauty is now we have access in Ont. to review our lab results online ourselves. Ill start him on milk thistle asap.thanks.

Craymom - I love having access to my test results the same day I get the lab work done...it often saves me a visit to the Dr - if everything is in range...so saving health care $$$.

I have been getting lab work monthly since starting the antibiotics.

I thought i'd add. I have horrible ragweed allergies (take Claritin) and never had issues with Milk Thistle...maybe the amts weren't high enough ...but i'd give it a shot...maybe start slow.
