I found this quote to be so telling:

Had I been a man and had erectile dysfunction there would be something readily available...but those afflicted with Lyme Disease aren't high enough on the list for more studies.

this could be said about many other illnesses or dysfunctions.. hopefully the cdc upping their estimates on lyme will help with research interest. they go where there's numbers and if people dont know they have it there is no count.

ed is pretty serious, i mean you may not die but in a way.. it can mess up your life. birth control, abortion, estrogen supplements, antidepressants, std treatments.. can marginalize any of them pretty easily. the person must have done 'something wrong' to need it? is the common theme. i try i do not rag on those who are already in an undesirable situation regardless of whether they 'put themselves there' or not. but if they are taking it out on me well then i could be persuaded

I just never knew how many people had lyme until I got it. I never see it in the news unless it is an pop singer. The statistics are amazing and yet it is so unknown.

When I told my Mom, "I have lyme disease." My Mom says to me "when did you go to Connecticut?" My Mom was valedictorian for 8th, high and college. She is no dummy and this was her response? Now at 83 she is sharp as a tack and learning about lyme. Look out world!!

I don't blame the average Joe for ignorance because I certainly don't know everything.

However, I continue to be appalled by the behavior exhibited by our government and medical professionals. People suffer needlessly.

And, as mentioned already, it's not just about Lyme.

yup-boner pills for old farts more important than emerging infectious diseases! Obviously, it is who yields the power & who makes the $.

Guess all should bring printouts when visiting "out of the circle" organizations/docs, saying, "Perhaps this info will shed some of the light, as many like you [with arrogant ignorance] are unaware re the numbers & horror of this disease.

Blood drawn can show the visible & active spirochete bacteria & parasites, although most major testing is sadly lacking & seemingly politically tainted. It is important for those sworn to uphold the Hippocratic oath to arm themselves with knowledge & compassion.

P.S. With 300k-1 million affected, general spread & blood transfusions, I sure hope YOU don't get any facet of this disease, as you will quickly learn the nightmare of the disease itself & the uneducated, lacking compassion folks that you will encounter."

And Trav-the best pamphlet or printout for someone to bring to share?

Oh my gosh I watched Under Our Skin for the first time last night. What a powerful movie. If you have never seen it, please watch it. There is a way to watch it that has commercials or you can get sick of the commercials like I did and join Hulu 7 day free trial and watch it and then cancel Hulu.

I so want to buy a copy of this video and "give" it to my neurologist that said "you don't have lyme, because you don't get a headache with lyme."

My husband bought-"Why I can't get better"-one copy for us and he sent one to my primary. Every Dr. should be required to read it......

Oooo thank Traveler. Mtlassor my internal medicine doctor has no idea what lyme disease is. But the neurologist? Come on.... he should know at least some of the symptoms.

I am just amazed at how uneducated the medical field is about lyme.

They are taught that it's hard to catch and easy to treat, so they don't spend any time really learning much about it. They simply don't expect to see it in their practice.

At least that I understand some. I saw on another forum where a guy was telling people that if they has massive amounts of pain to get into treatment right away, but otherwise they should wait and see if they even need treatment. What the heck?? That doesn't rename sense!
