My toddler was bit by an Ixiodes Angustus tick in WA state 3 weeks ago. I sent the tick to the LMZ in the Universtity of MA to get tested and IDed, as well as the local department of health. The tick came back negative for all disease that species could carry by DNA testing.

However her leg is still looking horrible, even 3 weeks later. At first it was just the central red area but after 2 weeks, the outer red area started. Largest size was about a nickel. It hasn't grown in the last week. But it still looks so awful. I have brought her to the pediatrician twice. We tried a course of topical antibiotic ointment, though she didn't think it was infected. It had no effect. We didn't do oral antibiotics because it tested negative for disease. I contacted the LMZ and they say their tests are 100% accurate because they are DNA tests of the tick.

Does anyone have any ideas what is causing this skin reaction?

You are relying on testing? I wouldn't. I would go by a bullseye. Lyme is supposed to be a clinical diagnosis. A bullseye is diagnostic BY ITSELF for Lyme. If it were my kid, I'd have him/her on antibiotics ASAP.

Sorry to hear about your babe. The best relief i have found for all my body ailments, esp skin rashes:
epsom salt and hydrogen peroxide. I vary the amount as needed and use in baths, as a spray and as a compress. Something about that combo is super healing. Magnesium helps one to absorb other vitamins/minerals and al mood booster. Also helps the body to detox. After a bath i apply coconut oil-great antifungal and antibacterial moisturizer.
All non toxic and gentle so would be safe for all ages.

It's not a bullseye. It doesn't look at all like any EM rash I've seen, I've looked all over the Internet.

I wish I could post a photo! If anyone knows how, please let me know. It's like a red raised scar looking thing. With a red area around it but not bullseye.

To be clear, the testing wasn't her blood testing. It was the actual tick I sent to get DNA tested. It was supposed to be 100% accurate.

To post an image you need to use a site like 'tinypic' or similar. once the image is uploaded there grab the code for it (the one to post on forums).

You will need to go to the top of this page and click on 'post reply'. This will bring up a new page where you can post a reply and add the picture. You will need to cick on the 'img' (image) button, then post the code you have for the picture, then click on the 'img' button again.

When you are done hit the 'post' botton.....and voila!

The link to your picture should then appear on your post in this thread. Hope that helps :)

Is she having any symptoms? With a rash that is still hanging around after that long, I would say that their testing may not be as accurate as they would like to think, or she was actually bit before this and no one knew.

It's all about the symptoms. Is she old enough to tell you what her symptoms are?
