I recently learned about this. Drs are people with opinions, different opinions - even when looking at MRI's.

I dont know how new this is, but no past post on this that I found.

After a brain MRI is run to their specs at (many imaging places), the data is sent to them to be compared to known diseases ect. Its compared by software, not people. Less error. Lyme? Alshiemers, MS, mold, injury, whatever.............they dont have one for bad spelling....falls under lyme I suppose.

It would be good to have a "computer brain" look at it before the radiologist (is it a radiologist with an MRI?) does.

Every time I had imaging done (when looking for a diagnosis) - I always wondered if the person looking at it - missed something.
So, I often wasn't / aren't satisfied with the report....and would still 'fret' about whatever it was they were trying to rule out.

I also wonder if the Specialist (neurologist, neurosurgeon,etc.) - just read the report...or if they take a look at it, too.

Its a software program that does comparisions- so it has some sort of limitations it looks for. The MRI is set to specific settings just for this program comparison- so all image variables are thus eliminated.

Most local places can set thir MRI to this spec, (must be exact) then the data is sent on disk to Neuroquant.

No nuerologist needed (the're worse than endocronologists) .

Your LLMD or PCP can order both and the answeres come back in "plain english".

The article mentions that they are looking for brain volume and it makes perfect sense to use a computer to calculate the volume of the irregular 3 dimensional brain structures. A radiologist is looking at a single plain and taking a measurements trying to see if a structure is too narrow but he/she can actually see the depth at the same time (pretty much impossible unless it is grossly obvious).

As for the actual MRI there is a huge difference in how radiologists interpret the films. I have had patients with classic herniated disc symptoms that came back with a completely clean report only to go to another imaging center to have an obvious disc diagnosis. Also if you are getting any brain imaging you need to make sure they take as many slices as they can. Not all MRI studies are the same and the width between slices can be adjusted it can make a huge difference when dealing with the CNS. Last you should never have a scheduled MRI done at a place that also treats emergencies, the local hospital for most people.
The problem is that the MRI machine in places like that are very often backed up and if you aren't as emergency case they may take less slices to get you through the door and make room for the guy with a suspected hemorrhage.

I think a lot of people just take it for granted that whoever is looking at the mri images knows what their doing.

Like anything, opinions vary, mistakes included.

I agree on many points here and think this has big potential, yet worries me a bit as well. All computers are programmed by humans - humans make mistakes.

On the difference in how radiologists interpret films - there's a huge difference! My own hubby had a clean report come back - and we know that he has two vertebrae (not discs) that only had around 2/3rds of them left and his back is riddled with severe arthritis - that had been determined 10 years previously.

I don't trust radiologists any more than I trust any main stream medicinal doctor to "get it right" - and yes, I'm very hard on all of them - why? 40 years of Lyme and other infections and issues being brushed off, plus my own hubby's experiences. I honestly believe that there are very, very few medical personnel out there that are trustworthy to do a good job every day - not just once in a while.

My apologies to all medical personnel. Obviously, if you are one of those precious gems that actually do your job to the best of your ability - my hat is off to you!! Thank you!! You are the reason I have not completely walked away from Western Medicine.
