I was diagnosed with babesia (done by blood smear) and for the most part am over the worst of it but I wanted to ask a babesia related question here because I know someone can answer it, but I've had these hypoglacemic episodes where I feel I'm empty and jittery and starving for food even though eat a lot. Someone mentioned it could be the babesia but what is the connection to babesia and the feeling of not eating?
Babesia, as well as other Plasmodium parasites have a need for glucose. They use up yours and then you get low blood sugar. I explained it very simply, but there are many medical articles that explain this in more detail. Here is just one I grabbed quickly:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2257322
Notice these sentences:
"The parasites increase glucose consumption 50-100 fold as compared to uninfected red cells; most of the glucose is metabolized to lactic acid. The parasite contains a complete set of glycolytic enzymes."
Essentially, you then get depleted levels of glucose in the blood plasma. This is very real. I've had it happen to me, too. I even had a couple low blood sugar results with regular blood testing after getting sick. I previously never had that before I got sick.
