Herx on amoxicillin abx? Please advise

Hi all,

My wife's LLMD had her on doxy, rifampin and biaxin for the month of Dec. Was on just doxy since Sept by another non-LLMD. She has tolerated both treatments well. She stopped late Dec to take a week break and took diflucan daily just to be safe. She also takes nyastatin powder daily and heavy dosages of probiotics. She felt pretty good during that week break. Some minor aches in knees, ankles and wrist, but nothing like a few months earlier. She never had any major herx either.

That week was short lived as joint aches back back worse than how she felt prior to taking a break.

Her LLMD switched her up to biaxin and amoxicillin (1g twice daily). I understand amoxicillin is sometimes prescribed at higher doses, but her LLMD hesitates to go any higher. FYI, my wife is petite and weighs 108 lbs if that makes any difference with dosage.

about a week after being on amoxicillin, her joint aches have intensified. No other symptoms. No fevers. We're both very worried whether or not she's backsliding or if it's a herx? She is completely devastated and it's heart-wrenching that I can't do anything for her :(

Her LLMD thinks it might be a herx. She also started her period a couple days ago, so maybe the timing is all coincidental. At her next appt, he might prescribe plaquenil to the current regimen.

I've read that amoxicillin can cause joint pains, so we won't know what to think. Any advice or past experience is greatly appreciated.

The combination of starting a new med and her menstrual cycle starting is likely the culprit. Please have her increase her detoxing to help ease her symptoms.

Something else that's very important - amoxicillin needs to be combined with probenecid in order for it to stay in the blood stream long enough to actually have a big enough impact on her infection. This information can be found in the ILADS treatment guidelines that were written by Dr. Burrascano:

Hi Traveler - My wife doxes with FIR saunas a few times a week, cucumber water, burbur, parsley and most recently pinella.

If it's a result of new meds (amoxi), that would be news to her. She previously tolerated every other abx pretty well without these kinds of joint pains.

I'm not sure why her LLMD didn't prescribe probenecid. I'll check when we go for a follow-up.

I honestly think that it just stirred things up because it was started at the time around her period started - but that's my own theory. We never know what treatment will hit us hard though. Many are surprised when they switch to another treatment and find that it's very effective for them.

Ammox without probenecid won't kill many of the Lyme bacteria. That's why the probenecid is necessary.

Have her try dry skin brushing or even a Epsom salt soak. I would actually really encourage her to use the Epsom salt soak because the combination of the warm water and the Epsom salts are super good for sore joints and bruises and sprains for those without Lyme as well.

If her joint issues continue, I would encourage you to try Teasel. It's known to help many with joint issues when they have Lyme.

I was on Amoxy - 1 gram three times a day - at that time I weighed 128 lbs. Also was given the Probenecid to be taken with it.

I have read that sometimes even higher doses that the 3 grams daily is prescribed.

How much biaxin is she taking?

oatez there's differences of opinion from LLMD's on how long you should treat if you feel your symptoms aren't improving or getting worse. some will switch you to something else in a few weeks if you go down south quickly while others will tell you to stick it out longer. sounds like your wife's LLMD may prescribe to the 'going longer' route. it's one of the great mysteries with this disease are you making progress due to worse symptoms or is the new regimen less effective?

i see my LLMD monthly and if something isn't improving he'll usually do something. i've even heard of an LLMD that purposely switching up meds monthly whether they're working or not.

there are plenty of opinions on this board about this for sure ;)
