Omnicef & itching hands - allergic reaction, Bart die off?

I have been on Biaxin for a month and only half the prescribed dose of Omnicef for the past 3 weeks and just upped it to the full dose 6 days ago.

My hands started to itch slightly since yesterday and have really increased tonight. I had the same reaction to penicillin after a couple days of taking it, I stopped the medicine right away and this was 5 years ago. This was a for something not related to lyme. I know there can be a small cross-reactivity with the Omnicef and penicillin.

Could this be another allergic reaction? I have no hives, but I don't know if this is the start of the reaction and it could get a lot worse. I also know my doctor mentioning Bart die off and itching hands. That was after I told him my about my previous experience with penicillin.

Has anyone had a Bart die-off with itching hands? I fell like if I was going to have an allergic reaction that it would have happened earlier on with taking the Omnicef??

i've had tingling hands and toes from bart die off but not itchiness. i can also tell you when i was on omnicef i developed a chronic sore throat after a few doses. when i stopped it went away so i definitely had some allergic reaction to it.

an allergic reaction can take time for example i'm also allergic to bactrim it took about 5 days before my eyes started drying out and i got these bags under my eyes and looked like i was 90 so it could take a while. tough thing here is you don't know if you're having an allergic reaction or bug die off.

I'm sorry, I have no idea on if you are developing an allergic reaction or not. They can happen immediately like they do with me (penicillin and Keflex allergies) or they can take a while to build.

The thing with the itchy hands though - I get that as my psoriasis is starting up, which oddly enough, means my intestinal flora is really out of whack. When I'm in treatment for these infections, I stay right on the edge of my psoriasis flaring. I get these little red dots on the palms of my hands to begin with, then, if it's not addressed, the full blown psoriasis break outs start happening. The itch can be down right maddening.

I mention this to help explain why I'm going to suggest you take a hard look at your probiotics too. Make sure you are taking enough, and a high enough dose to make sure you don't have any intestinal issues - or other possible issues like this.

Thanks for responding! I called my doctor and they told me to stop the Omnicef until my appointment with him next week. So we shall see.

Traveler- I did read something about yeast, intestinal issues and itchy skin. I am taking a good probiotic and saccharomyces (good yeast). I have been slacking on drinking my Kefir everyday though. I may have to get a bit more strict again. I was starting to slack a bit. Thank you!

Probiotics are a very important part of our healing and being able to stay in treatment - but I can have the same issues at times. There is so much to keep up with some days that it can be difficult!

I get itchy feet....especially my right foot. Holy smokes, I feel like I need a BBQ cleaning brush to scratch them. I haven't had this problem lately but when I do get it I go crazy!

Oh yikes Jenny! I am feeling like that with my hands now! I can't sleep!! They are itching and burning so badly! Did you see a correlation when it stopped or flared up?

I actually don't know what causes it to occur....it just kind of happens. I read somewhere that itching is actually pain that hasn't manifested to it's fullest yet....so, considering bartonella has been my main complaint, I would not be surprised if the bart is attacking my nerve endings somehow, causing the itching? Speaking of burning, my feet get that too. I've found that a good foot soak in epsome salts and peroxide will help and also putting gold bond anti-itch lotion helps. Now mind you, my feet don't have issues with the skin and the skin is normal, so I do not believe it's an "outside" issue but an "inside" issue for me at least. I get systemic fungal issues from time to time and it does manifest between two of my toes, which tells me to take my diflucan, but the itchy area is a different part of my foot. The fungal issue only pops up occasionally and mostly after I've consumed too many grains. Thankfully my ND gave me a scrip for the diflucan so that I can have it on hand and take as needed.

Try to the gold bond after soaking for a bit and see if that gives you any relief? I sure hope it does!
