Safe to take 400mg Doxy daily for months on end?

As part of my treatment plan for Bart/Ehrlichia/Babesia I am going to take 400mg of Doxy per day [200mg twice a day], just wondering if anyone has taken this dose for months [3-10] on end? Is it safe to take a dose this high long term provided one is taking probiotics to protect the gut? Are there any known side effects from a long term dose this high? Should I opt for 300mg per day instead if for some reason I can't tolerate 400mg? Thanks!

I wouldn't stay on doxy alone for 10 months.

After a month or two on it...a second antibiotic should be added. Monotherapy for lyme and co's isn't recommended by LLMD's.

Probiotics should help to protect your gut...but also taking it with food will help.

I wouldn't opt for 300 mg a day...if I had to choose, I would take 400 mg daily for a shorter time than 300 mg daly for 10 months.

Make sure you're on a good detox regimen....multiple methods - daily.

I only took doxy for two months (had a week long break in the middle - due to the sun issues).

What are you planning to add for bart or babesia? Doxy alone won't do it.

Oh yeah not alone, I'm also taking Mycobutin [for suspected bart and as a bactericidal addition] and pulsed Zithromax. Going to add in Plaquenil and Malarone soon too. All of my organs are healthy and I'm young so I'm throwing everything at this..kind of. I dont herx either, my symptoms are relatively mild compared to most on this forum.

I also don't believe I have active Lyme, just the others, so maybe 200-300mg of Doxy daily would be enough for those if Lyme isnt my issue? Im just afraid 400mg sounds so high to take daily for months...especially with other drugs

You do know that the rifabutin can make the atovaquone less effective when take together?

I'm curious - why you're concerned about the doxy dosage in particular...?

That is the standard dose for doxy for lyme - 200 mg twice daily.

Having said that - if you're on zithro - that should be enough to go with the rifabutin and malarone.

Girlie, yes I have read that Rifabutin will make the Atovaquone less effective. I plan to take high doses of Mepron and Malarone to counteract this. I'll also be taking Plaquenil and another anti protozoal drug which are not effected by Rifabutin. Also to my understanding, Rifabutin is not as bad as Rifampin when it comes to over metabolizing other drugs like Atovaquone.

I'm hoping to start either Mepron or Malarone soon...just not sure - if given the choice - which one I want to do.

I will be taking it with Minocycline and Ceftin or biaxin and Ceftin. (probably do both at different times)


I'm still gathering information....so why did you choose Malarone over Mepron? I heard it's cheaper...any other reason?

Malarone has Proguanil in it and I took it a while back and I herxed so I wanted to try it again. I might go both Mepron and Malarone b/c Rifabutin reduces the levels of Atovaquone and I'm taking that too. I'm just hitting this stuff hard I guess.

BTW, I heard that there is a form of Doxy that is easier on the stomach lining- Doxy Monohydrate- anyone heard of this? Is this safe to take without food, unlike Doxy Hyclate?

Floridadude is your concern with the effect on your stomach?

When I began doxi my stomach was quite sensitive to it, though I have only be prescribed 300mg a day I am quite a small human. I looked into ways to reduce the sensitivity and found that having a glass of warm bone broth that I've been cooking up in the evening followed by a probiotic has completely changed my stomach, and not just in relation to doxi but everything else.

Get some free-range beef bones from your local butcher and cook them up over 48 hours to get all the nutrients, minerals and healthy fats that will coat your stomach. I couldn't believe how strong my became and I didn't really have stomach issues to begin with.
