Thyroid anyone?

Okay, so I was at the dermatologists this week for something unrelated and he looked at my throat and said my thyroid looked swollen. (Granted he's a dermatologist but he's still an MD.) it's sometimes tender but I've had thyroid tests like free T3 and T4 but nothing comes of it. What tests should I specially ask the doctor to order?

I'm assuming it was FT3 and FT4?

Have you had the antibodies testing done?

And were your FT3 and FT4 in the upper end of range?

I'll ask for the results but I don't have them currently. :(
I don't honk I ever had antibody tests done. Could I have a normal range of FT3 and FT4 and have antibody problems?
I've been waking up at night coughing and I occasionally choke on water and things like that. I'm wondering if maybe this is why?

I was occasionally choking on my own spit sometimes...and gagging/gasping for air at night.


My thyroid labs were all good...and i also don't have fatigue.

My throat stuff has gotten much better with time and treatment.
The constant feeling of a lump in my throat is much better, too..almost completely gone.

It's good to get it checked out...have you seen an ENT?

So Girlie, you don't have thyroid issues?
I have really, really bad fatigue. I've never seen an ENT.

No, I don't have thyroid issues...(not that I know of)

But, I don't have fatigue...so it's not likely and my TSH was less than 1 and very consistent every time I was tested (3 or 4 times over the past couple years) FT3 and FT4 - in upper end of ranges.

I saw an ENT because it felt like I had a lump in my throat...and was choking on food, even my own spit.

He put a tube (with a camera) through my nose down my throat to look at my vocal cords...to see if there was any irritation..or something...and everything was fine.

When I press on the left side of my throat...there's a crunching when I press on 'something' - feels like cartilage -it may be nothing...but not there on my right side.

I never put these things to rest...I always come back to them..and get worried I'm missing 'something'.

Have you done the morning temperature test?
Mine is low...that is one thing that I do have that could point to thyroid.....or not...lol

The lump feel in my throat has always been when my thyroid was hypo or the beginning of GERD - acid reflux.

Yes the antibodies to test are TPO and TGaB. In the beginning of hypothyroidism you can have normal T3/T4, but elevated tpo or tgab sometimes..

Just remember- Drs like to think if Free T3 and Free T4 are in range, then your fine. Makes sense right? Wrong.

If they are on the low end but still in range, its still lower than optimal, and you most likely will feel hypo.

Why these "ranges" are set so low continues to be a mystery with "thyroidians" world wide.

one of these days, Astro...I will find the time to go through my husband's last few labs...and post - hopefully you will see it.

Not sure what to do - I think he needs an increase.

Okay, so I know this was taken over a year ago. But these are the only records I currently have access to.
Thyroid Peroxidase and thyroglobulin antibodies were tested for and were in range.
T 3 reverse was 22 with reference range 8-25
T4, free was 1.4 Ref range 0.8-1.8
T3, free was 3.0 Ref range 2.3-4.2
T3 total was 95 Ref range. 76-181
It's all techically normal but I don't know.

Do you feel more tired at all now, compared to a year ago when these were done?

If you have lab coverage from ins. Id think about doing them again. Stop the thyroid maddness has the frees foe around $80 if there is a blood draw place near you that they use.

If your T3 is even lower, than you might have a slight T4 to T3 conversion issue, but there is nothing alarming about this. Good that you didnt have autoimmune thyroid starting.

If you do get another Ft3 and FT4 test (no need for the others) by another lab, you will have to figure out percentages for comparison, since different testing machines (its done by a machine (what an invention)) have different ranges used.
