worried about Cat's Claw

my daughter has been taking cat's claw and JKW for a few months now, and this combo is like a miracle for her.

i explained this to a friend of mine, and she decided to try the same thing with her daughter, only she came across an article saying that cat's claw can be abortifacient.

i did alot of research and never came across this. she said if it has this property, then it could cause fertility problems. I never heard of this possibility before? I just wanted to reach out to all of you to see if you can provide any insight into this. I am worried now!

It's contraindicated in pregnant women. So if your daughter isn't pregnant there is no concern.

I believe it also needs to be stopped before any major surgeries.

yes, i read about the surgery situation (bc she may need her tonsils out), and i read about pregnancy - most herbs are not safe during pregnancy bc they have not been Fda approved, etc.

but has anyone ever heard of an abortifacient drug resulting in infertility?? that is my biggest concern. i just dont want my daughters reproductive system being affected, she just got her period this past year.

Chapelle - I thought abortifacient just meant it could cause an abortion - not infertility?

Did you read something about it causing infertility?

yes, abortifacient only means it can cause an abortion or miscarriage, however, yes, i did read that cat's claw also has contraceptive properties - which means that women of childbearing age trying to get pregnant should avoid it.

i have always believed that BCPs can indeed affect fertility if taken for so many years - so now i am worried about cat's claw. I am really at a crossroads bc it is helping my daughter so much, but i don't want it to alter anything that would eventually affect her ability to have children in the future.

"Reportedly, cat's claw has also been used as a contraceptive by several different tribes of Peru (but only in very large dosages). Dr. Fernando Cabieses, M.D., a noted authority on Peruvian medicinal plants, explains that the Asháninka boil 5 to 6 kg (about 12 pounds) of the root in water until it is reduced to little more than 1 cup. This decoction is then taken 1 cup daily during the period of menstruation for three consecutive months; this supposedly causes sterility for three to four years."

Note that it says they would boil down 12 lbs in water until it's reduced to 1 cup. Anyone taking that large of amount isn't treating Lyme disease!

my husband had the same idea - he said she would probably have to take much higher doses than just dropperfuls for these effects to take place, but i couldn't find much info on it -
