Does anyone know how effective the test for co-Infections is?

Hi shanna -

You might need to be more specific. It depends on which confection tests you're interested in. I think anaplasmosis, mycoplasma tests are pretty good. But many other confection tests are just as inaccurate as the lyme tests--mainly because they look for one or two strains when people are infected with many strains (babesia, for instance).

Sometimes MDs will use them because insurance requires them in order to cover treatment, sometimes they use them for their own interests but coinfections are also usually diagnosed clinically.

The two LLND's I have seen have both said the tests for the co-infections - Bartonella and Babesia are worse than the testing for Lyme. More false negative results.

I think that's the consensus.

Girlie- is this true? IGenex seems to be the gold standard for lyme and other tick-born infections. What labs are more accurate?

I would pick Igenex for lyme testing but would not pick any company for co-infection testing. I have not found a reliable one for co testing to date.

I guess it may depend on the co-infection being tested. For example, mycoplasma, the HHV viruses, cytomegalovirus are some that labcorp/quest seem pretty good at picking up. But stinks of course for the ones that most people really want to know such as Bart, babesia, etc.

Yes, Dave - Igenex is the best for testing lyme...and maybe some of the co-infections. But, the co-infection testing is still less accurate than Lyme testing. I didn't mean that Igenex lab is not a good lab...just that testing for co-infections isn't accurate no matter where you get tested.

For Bartonella, I think you would get better results from Galaxy labs. But, I think it's quite expensive.

The best test for me was to begin with treatment and observe.

Did I herx? Yes or no.
Did symptoms begin to reduce with treatment. Yes or no.

I herxed on Cats Claw, Colloidal Silver, and a chance bit of Bactrim

Symptoms began to reduce.

When things hit a tableau - I switched up herbs and began treatment for co-infections, one at a time, using a symptom chart for different co-infections to guess which was more likely.

I started to herx again.

This was enough for me to know it is a "probable" tick infection.

Lyme and co-infections are a clinical diagnosis and blood tests aren't terribly reliable.

I DID eventually have an IGEN-X test.

A GREAT TEST for me was Horowitz's questionnaire which you can access online for free. I scored a crazy high number on the questionnaire - and it was sort of a no brainer after that.

I can tell you from my experience I tested positive twice for Babesia Duncani through Igenex. I think Igenex is quite good here as they use technology that irradiates the organism in the blood and you can clearly see it. Bartonella came back negative and I have that but I think Bartonella testing is very inaccurate given labs never test for more than 1-2 types and there are at least 25 and not sure if you can see it via irradiance the same as Babesia.

I tested positive through Igenex for Babesia Duncani, Bartonella, and Anaplasmosis. Of course, I also tested positive on the CDC lyme test (through LabCorp), but IND on the Igenex lyme test.
