Hyperreflexia and lyme disease

I was told yesterday that I'm hyperreflexic. Is this another crappy symptom of lyme disease?

I have this and it was noted by neurologist. It started when all my neuro stuff came on. If someone bumps my leg or foot it jumps.

Hyperflexia is actually a sign of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome.

How do you get tested for this?

I would bet its lyme related if the symptoms came along suddenly.

When the Neurologist did the reflex test (with the hammer), he wrote down the results. that was almost two years ago now.
I didn't see the results until recently. and I had hyperflexia with my left arm. (that's my bad side)

I think it was +3 (I'd have to check the report)
My right arm was either +1 or +2.

When I went online to read about it..it said that it's more of an issue if your left side is different than your right side. which was the case for me.

2+ is considered normal.

She wasn't specific on where I had it. She just made a note of it for the techs who will be doing the mri of my neck.

I guess I should have asked but we drove 2.5 hours to this appointment and I was feeling God awful and I had so many other questions on my mind I needed to ask. This was at a really good neurosurgeon Institute near Chicago.

is the mri of your neck related to the hyperreflexia?

Low magnesium levels can also cause hyperreflexia. That is an exaggerated reflex. Magnesium is cellular so your blood levels can be normal and you can still be low. I need about 800 mg several days a week to stay normal. Lots of other symptoms go with it also, most people are low in magnesium unless they supplement, our soil is deficient.
Hyperflexia is a different thing, the joints are too flexible, Ehlers Danlos is a connective tissue disorder.

Lindalew - Thanks for the correction - I had typed hyperflexia instead of hyperreflexia.


...and yes it's an exaggerated reflex. Interesting that my reflex was exaggerated on the side that had muscle atrophy and nerve issues...I would have thought it wouldn't be as responsive...rather than over responsive.

Although - I was 'twitching' more on my left arm ...so, maybe it makes sense that it was 'hyper'.

The mri will be done because of an x ray of my neck that she didn't like the look of so she wants to see,what's going on in my cervical spine.

I take mag but probably not enough. I can try that.
