Hello. I have 2.5 year old who seems happy and healthy. I'm wondering what the chances ate she also has lyme. I'm trying not to worry and am having a wait and see approach but I am wondering what the odds are. If there has been any studies on it to have odds.

I can. My doctor seemed to think there was no need for it yet since she isn't displaying symptoms. I guess the thought was to not make her go for bloodwork and pay the 1500 to send it to the states yet. Do they treat toddlers the same as adults if they are positive for lyme?

jambe - why $1500? You could do the Igenex Lyme WB for $210.


Sometimes they will use amoxicillin for toddlers.

If I get tested for any coinfection it comes to about 1500. I only did lyme and I think Bart and it was over 600. I'm in Canada. Our exchanges is the pits right now.

I just did a test from Health Genetics - in Ontario.

They test for infectious diseases. My new LLND suggested I try - she wanted to see if I might test positive for Babesia. She had only used the lab three times...and one did test positive for Babesia.

Because they were only $125 each - and that tests both urine and blood, I decided to do Babesia, Bartonella, and Candida.

I got a positive test for Bartonella. After 1 year of treatment, there is still bacteria in my blood.

It's a PCR - testing for dna of bacteria in the blood. Of course a negative doesn't mean negative, but a positive is indeed positive.

So, I paid $375 for all three - I didn't see a charge for LifeLabs yet..which is odd.

So, my LLND now had two positives out of 4 (one babesia, and one bartonella)

To keep your sweet one safe you could not exchange body fluids. So no stirring her food with a spoon you have put in your mouth. No kissing with saliva, which for a child is hard.

Her fingers in your mouth and then into hers.

Those are the things I would try and not do.

I also would not make a super big deal of it because you don't want her to not be affectionate. This is tough.

Canadians can do Igenex. I would just to the WB lyme before I went for any co-infection testing. Besides co-infection testing is still unreliable.

If she got a negative you would still wonder.

I'm so new to this. I thought lyme was transmitted through tick bites. I havent read anything that said it was transmitted otherwise, just that there is a chance in pregnancy. So it's to be treated as a virus or basically a std in a sense?

Yes, it is transmitted through placenta...the CDC even published that....they do deny sexual transmission for the time being, but...so they say... that it is found in vaginal secretion and sperm.
Here people say it is transmitted through saliva, which means that kissing is another way to spread it or drinking from the same place someone drunk. Although my understanding is that spirochete does not do well outside human body. Needs a host...or die.
I have read on S. Buhner book on lyme that is transmitted through many ways as well...primary vectors are ticks, sexual and mother to baby....tears, mouth, vaginal ...
I went to a seminar by dr. Cass Ingram, who also is a Lyme Disease expert as well as a survivor and he said exactly the same thing of Buhner...and that can be passed also by mosquitos, horse flies and even fleas.

It's suspected that it may be passed on through sexual activity.
The bacteria is found in semen and vaginal secretions.

I'm not sure what to think about - re: if kissing would pass it on via saliva. I go back and forth on it.
I have asked a LLMD and two LLND's and all three of them - their opinions was no.

But, I guess to be safe...you won't want to share your saliva.

I'm totally naive and haven't done much reading yet wit work and a 2 year old (just diagnosed) so I'm going to sound ignorant here, but if it was transmitted through saliva and through sexual activity wouldn't 3/4 of the population have it by now?

That's what my new LLND says.

Like I said, I go back and forth on it...

There are a diseases that are sexually transmitted, but aren't passed on via saliva.
Syphilis is one, right? (or am I wrong)

From the cdc --

You can get syphilis by direct contact with a syphilis sore during vaginal, anal, or oral sex. Sores can be found on the penis, vagina, anus, in the rectum, or on the lips and in the mouth. Syphilis can also be spread from an infected mother to her unborn baby.

It is the sore with syphilis.

They don't know for sure about lyme at all. I just pick to error on the side of caution.

It isn't even blood for syphilis, it is ooze from the sore - sorry for the graphic yuckie word.

No one knows for sure much about lyme. The can't get a test that is super accurate for co-infections, there is no positive cure and the aren't even sure about what insects transmit it. I guess it is hard to catch some of them. LOL

I don't believe they have any concrete evidence about transmission via body fluids either.

I just know how I feel about it. If there is one inkling of a chance I could give it to a loved one, there is no way I could do that. With the knowledge I know, I can't take a chance.

Now, if I did not know I had lyme and had a child that is no fault of mine. Or if I transmitted it to my husband not knowing I had it.

I just know that I have it living in me even though I have no symptoms and am in remission. I still will not kiss someone on the lips or have unprotected sex with my husband.

Not until someone totally proves to me that I won't give it to them.

What a horrible thing to give someone.

In my case it is a personal choice.

The speculation on the saliva is that spirochetes harbor in mouth. However I am sure that for some people harbor more than others. Spirochetes are in periodontal disease as well, a different type.... Question is ...are those contagious like the lyme ones? I agree on about 3/4 of population having it if it was contagious at that level, then again there are a lot of people with lyme disease who have not be bitten by ticks, and there are a lot of people undiagnosed as well.

Well, we don't know how many people with lyme that weren't bitten.

I didn't 'see' a bite...but it's likely I had one...if it's on the back of my neck under my hair...or behind my knee ...I might not have seen it...


I personally don't believe it's 'highly contagious' - with casual contact, sneezing, etc.
I think there would be an epidemic.
I'm not one who believes 'everyone' has it.
Just my opinion.

I agree with you as well Girlie.....and I also go back and forth even with the sexual transmission.
Also...is it still potentially contagious if one has it on remission?
