I was on 0.5 mgs three times a day, so Xanax was not horribly addictive for me, so a slow taper worked well for me. If you can taper down as far as you can, then you can start something that will help with your anxiety as you continue to taper down the Xanax, it might work out well for you.
I was heavily addicted to Trazodone though (for sleep), and that was a bear to get off of for me. I had to do a very slow tapering dose down from 900 mgs and managed to get to about 12 - 15 mgs on my own, but had to go to Ambein for a few weeks, then I was able to taper that down and replace it with tryptophan - and it's working well for me now.
I am hoping I don't need anything for anxiety as I taper down from the Xanax. I am experimenting with L-theanine during the taper. I also have Kavinance if I need it. I rarely have needed to take it though.
I was on 50 mg of Trazodone and slowly tapered off of it. I didn't have any problems with it. It never helped me sleep, but that was long before I had a Lyme dx.
I have not tried tryptophan.
I have read that some people really do much better the lower they get on a benzo because the therapeutic level is now longer there and coming off isn't to bad. I hope I am in that camp!!
