My husband and I are starting the Buhner Protocol. We are ordering all the herbs, etc but already have JKW so starting with that...slowly...2 drops is kicking my husband's &^%$. I'm at 1.

So my question is....do you have to take the herbs away from food? Do you need to hold them under your tongue for 30 seconds and then swallow?

Any help is appreciated!

No and no. I take my herbs which are in tincture form, in a small amount of liquid and chug them down.

Have your husband cut back down to 1. Bad herxing is hurtful to his system.

He's usually a pretty good detoxer so JKW is strong stuff!

herbs are food. So you are kind of asking do you take "food" with food.

dacarte3 - I ask b/c w/Cowden you are supposed to take the herbs 30 mins before eating, I suppose for effectiveness. So it's not such a far fetched question.

And when you start taking the other herbs, you can take them together in a small amount of water...no need to separate.

The only herbs that I read that require to be taken separated by at least 15 minutes is Samento (TAO free Cat's Claw) and Banderol. This shouldn't be a problem since Banderol is not in Buhner's protocol.

I mix them all with 1/4 glass of water with a splash of ACV and 20 drops of GSE first thing in am and again at 6pm 1/2 hour before I eat dinner.

It may not be a good idea to mix the herbs with a 'detoxing agent' like ACV (apple cider vinegar) - I'm still searching for answers to that myself.

According to Buhner, you can take the herbs in his protocol either with or without food. The point is to get them into you regularly - how ever many times a day you are currently taking them.

I think the herbs are diluted in water for easier consumption and for taste. There are some nasty tasting herbs and just putting them under your tongue might make you less inclined to take them. Yuckie tasting.

I did mine in a splash of water and a water chaser. I did mine away from food. But that is just MY way. My thinking was, I wanted good absorption and if the food is there would it be absorbed as easy??? I thought not, so I did mine either before I ate on an empty tummy or I did mine a ways after I had eaten.

We all find out what works for us and there is no set in stone rule. Buhner constantly states that his writings are "recommendations."

I'm sure I came across the Herbal ACV drink in Buhner's first Healing Lyme book.

All good comments. Definitely add to water. I find that the tincture herbs are just too strong without water. I take mine away from food by only about 15 minutes- 1 hour. I used to take them with food. Personally I don't know if it makes a difference but I think beyond balance and nutramedix herbs suggest taking away from food, if I'm not mistaken.

Buhner says they can be taken on waking, before lunch, before dinner.

I always take it after food, because it irritates my stomach when it is empty.

I've taken mine in multiple ways - whatever is convenient and works with the flow of my day. Sometimes with food, sometimes without, just consistent in regard to 3 doses a day. In remission for the most part after one year of treatment.

Here's on reference to ACV from Buhner's Healing Lyme 1st edition

The Core Protocol section, Cats' Claw, page 103:

Quote:

" Some practitioners suggest that the tincture should not be taken sublingually as some evidence exists that it needs to be activated by stomach acid. Add the tincture to six ounces of water and one teaspoon of lemon juice or apple cider vinegar to increase the bioavailability of the herb."

There may be more references to ACV in the book, but don't have time to read thru
again and the book's index has no ACV listings.
