Buhner's neuroborrealis protocol

I've been reading Buhner's book. He has a really good description of neuroborrealis. I'm interested in his protocol; however, I've found myself (again) overwhelmed by the disorganization of the protocol, which may or may not be his fault, given the complexity of the disease and the nature of the herbs and how they work to cure.

In any case, on p. 216 he provides "an example of a useful neuroborrealis protocol" which provides apx 10 herbs. However, it's followed by a 5 page list of herbs that he also recommends for neuoborrealis, which is helpful, while also overwhelming.

This is the "example of a useful neuroborrealis protocol":

polygonum cudpidatum
salvia miltiorrhizal/scutellaria baicalensis
cordyceps/eleutherococcus/uncaria tomentosa
glycyrrhiza
uncaria rhynchophylla
withania somnifera
andrographis
tryptophan (what's in turkey I presume)
great lakes gelatin powder
vitamin c
selenium


...Again, feeling overwhelmed, and not sure where to start with all this. I think if I took all those herbs 3x a day, I would get sick. I know if I took the 5 pages of herbs that follow 3x a day, I would definitely get sick. So where to start.

I know skullcap and serrapetese are doing something, so I'm going to keep them in my protocol. Supposidely, they break up the biofilm, which is critical. I can feel a herx from them. I also feel that strangulation herx feeling I get from an hour long sauna, from the skullcap/serrapetese, so I know that's good, and those herbs are doing something good.


He says that "uncaria rhynchophylla" is absolutely critical to take for the neuroborrealis protocol, so I think I will just try to add this to the protocol, and see how it goes.

Oh, ok, uncaria rhynchophylla is cat's claw. I've taken this in the past. I think it may have made me herx.

polygonum cudpidatum is Japanese knotweed. I think I've taken this before on the Cowden protocol.

Salvia miltiorrhiza - red sage ... not sure if I've taken that before

scutellaria baicalensis- chinese skullcap which definitely helps

cordyceps/eleutherococcus/uncaria tomentosa - not sure what this stuff is

glycyrrhiza - liquorice ?

Withania somnifera, known commonly as ashwagandha - used this before, didn't do much

andrographis - false waterlillies. not sure what this is

I am using the uncaria rhynchophylla and upped it about a week and a half ago and definitely herxed. I think the 5 pages you are talking about are to be used specific to certain symptoms, correct? I agree with you on the overwhelming part. Add one thing at a time, and things you KNOW are working, definitely keep those in your meds. Buhner also states to treat the most debilitating symptoms first.

So, I think maybe I'll add cat's claw and japanese knotweed to my protocol. Do this for a month, and see where it gets me.

Does anyone have a recommendation on where to get high quality tinctures for these herbs?

I thought Buhner had a place he recommended, but now I don't really remember where.

cordyceps/eleutherococcus/uncaria tomentosa =
coryceps is a type of mushroom for enhancing the immune system.
Eleuthero is an herb that enhancing the immune system.
Uncaria tomentosa is a different 'strain' of cat's claw that is pretty good at enhancing the immune system.

He's giving you the names of the herbs that he suggests taking in combination for this.

Yes, glycyrrhiza is licorice root.

Andrographis is the only herb that actually "kills" the Lyme bacteria in his protocol - the rest of the herbs are for helping the body recover/repair/protect itself from the bacteria.

Ya, I had purchase a big Cowden herbal kit, and I remember cat's claw and japanese knotweed were the "killing" herbs in the kit. I was definitely herxing pretty heavy off of them. This was a year and a half ago, so I'm not sure if those tinctures have expired by now. Not sure if they have an expiration date.

I've not heard andrographis being called false water lilies before. Here is a link to some good information about it though. The proper name is Andrographis paniculata.

I usually make most of my own tinctures, so I buy the herb in bulk - but, have you checked Herb Pharm?

I'm not taking it yet, so I haven't purchased any - it may be a while before I'm ready to introduce that herb.

If the tinctures were stored out of light and heat, they are fine to use. They can last up to 3 years if stored in the right conditions.

I have had excellent customer service with hawaii pharm. I either order from them directly or if I have an Amazon order I order through Amazon. Hawaii Pharm has a high ratio 1:3 on most herbs, so it is strong and you may need less and it will last longer.

The only problem with Hawaii Pharm is that you may need to know the Chinese name of the herbs. Japanese Knotweed is Hu Zhang.

I purchase from green dragon botanicals. ..in capsules they might have tinctures..

I'm looking for best alternative to andrographis due to possible reaction. I don't know if he has said of one. But want a killer. A good one and easily available.

I have a big bottle of drinkable high test alcohol. I think generally people just stick the herbs in alcohol and let them sit for a month or two, and strain them out. But then I don't know how much to ingest. Also, I don't know if you can just stick all the herbs in together, or if you put them in separately.

are you taking Gou teng? uncaria tomentosa buhner recommends the tincture form for lyme Neurobeliosis wondering if it's worth using, it's really expensive.

Ideally each herb is made into its own tincture. YouTube has lots of videos on how to make tinctures. I know at one time I was looking into making tinctures and you get the actual leaf, roots or whatever parts and mix. I looked into organic grape alcohol - organicalcohol.com

I'm the odd sort, and prefer the "folk method" of making tinctures usually. Many prefer to use the methods that produce a more consistent ratio, like 1:3. I'll link sites for both.

I usually buy my herbs from one of the companies listed either in the back of Buhner's 2nd edition of "Healing Lyme" (page 451) or from one of the companies listed on page 2 of our "New to Lyme?" thread.

Traveler, I think you mean 1:3 ratio.

gflields, ratio is the weight of herb to volume of menstruum. That means that if you are preparing a dry plant tincture with a 1:3 ratio, and you have 1 ounce (by weight) of dried herb, you’ll want three ounces (by volume, in your glass measuring cup) of menstruum (alcohol or alcohol/water). If you are preparing a fresh plant tincture at a 1:2 ratio and you have 5 ounces (by weight) of fresh herb then you will need 10 ounces (by volume) of mentruum.

The smaller the ratio number the stronger the tincture.

There are two Cat's Claw - Uncaria tomentosa and Uncaria rhynchophylia



Maybe it was already mentioned and I missed it.
