SPIRULINA REACTION??

I have developed bad foot swelling in the past two months, even though I am detoxing fastidiously. I presumed it is just another lovely little new development from the lyme.

JUST DAWNED ON ME - I THINK the swelling has EXACERBATED since I STOPPED using spirulina. I HAD been using as much as 12 spirulina tabs daily (because spirulina has been purported to help remove heavy metals.)

I read a post from Dr. Isabella Wentz contending that spirulina could TRIGGER AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE. So I stopped using it.

Then just today, I saw Dr. Bill Rawls' video and he DOES NOT recommend spirulina (he likes chorella instead).

BUT - COULD IT BE THAT THE spirulina WAS removing metals or toxins, and NOW, they are building up in my system with NO spirulina??

I think spirulina is not a good heavy metal binder like chlorella. But it is an excellent nutrient source, antioxidant too.

I consume TONS of chlorella, for more than a decade. Without chlorella, I would CERTAINLY be still ill with lyme. If I had to choose a herb / supplement to heal from lyme, that would be chlorella.

Using chlorella for me, was like night and day. Without it, I was pure misery. With it (and other binders), life could go on, despite lyme treatment.

I had some spirulina too in the past (but spirulina is totally different from chlorella, to my understanding), but can't remember its effect.

It could be that spirulina was acting as an antioxidative agent (and then reducing inflammation), or that nutrients from it helped your body fight inflammation?

I'm of the opinion that the BEST strategy against lyme and chronic illnesses is in BUILDING the body: antioxidants, good nutrients, taking off allergens so that the body and gut can heal, cleaning the body so that the immune system can do its job well, sleep well, etc.

It is a total different view from most people treating lyme: they think the pathogen causes sickness, but some doctors in fact think that lyme is more like an auto-immune disease (pathogens are not in great number, but the body thinks it is being invaded and over react).

So, they treat MOSTLY inflammation. It is different than an exclusive antimicrobial approach. Meaning, if you take spirulina and get less inflammation, well, you are treating lyme!

I would continue on it, just to see what happens.

Make sure you get a very reputable chlorella, some can do more harm than good. You want to make sure it waes sourced properly and cleanly, free of toxins, etc... Best of luck

Can you recommend any brand(s) in particular?

My new llmd wants to have me do a "chlorella challenge". I'm assuming that's going to determine my level of heavy metals. Do they have you take chlorella before taking a urine tests for metals?

I looked at chlorella a while back on amazon and saw quite a few reviews where it made people sick. Also the sun chlorella brand has a warning that it contains lead! Huh?

You're right about it being spendy. How much do you take and how often?

I've never done such a test but there are lots of ways to test. My doctor doesn't test for them as she says that aren't very accurate, but that's her opinion.
I've never heard of lead being an issue with Sun Chorella. You will probably read negative things in some capacity about all the brands.
I started with 1 a for a few days, then gradually worked my way up to 3-4 a day. I think the box says to take 6 a day, but I'm too skinny so I figure I don't need that much.

That's encouraging, the label for sun chlorella says a serving is 15 tablets!

It is a nutrient and chelator... as far as chelation what channel are the toxins removed via? Urine? And should it be taken away from meds/herbs??

Not sure if it's removed via urine but it is through stool. Depending on how much you take, you may notice a greenish color. Don't be alarmed. A few other tips:
Don't take with hot beverages
Drink a lot of water with chlorella
Don't take near vitamin C
Take an hour before meals
Take an hour away from other meds/herbs
