Sometimes we need higher doses of vitamins and minerals...that isn't practical to get out of our food intake. Especially if we are deficient in one of them.
Example: Magnesium - To get 800 - 1200 mg out of food daily..wouldn't happen
Vitamin C - 2,000 mg daily - hard to get from food.
Vitamin B12 - 2,000 mcg - from food - not gonna happen.
