Bad reaction to doxy and antibiotics...

I seem to have bad reactions to antibiotics which is making me reconsider going forward with my current LLMD's protocol which includes doxy, zithro and bactrim.

Three days ago I started on doxy with a plan to take zithro the next day or two but my sleep got messed up so I stuck with doxy yesterday.

Now since then I've had left side body aches that have felt uncomfortable and has been running my sleep. I suspect I may need to ride it out until doxy leaves my system.

I also went to my local doctor last night to make sure nothing looks noticeably bad but she thought there was nothing showing on her end and agreed I should try to ride it out.

Before this, a month ago I had no issues with doxy for some reason but when I took one dose flagyl it also ruint my sleep for 24 hours and gave me a bad physical reaction to it.

I'm wondering now I may be too sensitive to handle antibiotics. Maybe all these years of Lyme and confections have ruined my system.

Anyone experience something similar before?

Hi Xelaetaks,

I had some herx-like symptoms and sleep issues when i was on Ceftin for a few months, but pushed through and continued the full course of treatment. I still have them sometimes as I am on the Buhner Protocol and probiotics. I would definitely consult your Dr. before considering this, but for sleep disturbances, I take a combination of a Nighttime Pain Reliever / Sleep Aid (Tylenol PM), and supplements L-Tryptophan, L-Theanine, and Ashwagandha. This seems to knock me out within an hour or so, helps with the aches and pains, and I am able to usually sleep 8-12+ hours through the night. Be aware though, that it's easy to oversleep with this combo. Hope this helps!

Hi sometimes we have to go slow with introducing the ABX also. I have seen others take it every other day and build up.

Maybe your llmd can help with a new schedule of taking them so you can ease into it and then see if you can handle it better.

I wish you the best of healing and hope this works out for you but remember if you are to sensitive there are other treatments or abx available to help.

Just have to figure out what works for you.

Antibiotics mess with my sleep too. Certain ones more than others. Strangely I was fine with mino/rifampin/bactrim but not ok with omnicef/azith. Make sure you take a binder (try several and see which one works for you - charcoal, modified citrus pectin, bentonite clay, etc). I suspect the die-off toxins irritate brain. I never had a sleep issue with antibiotics prior to lyme. If it is still bad after a bit maybe switch to a different antibiotic.

What dose are you taking? I started with 100mg doxy once a day, then second week twice a day. Also tini once every other day, and then twice every other day second week. After a month LLMD had me switch to every other day. He always says if the herx is too bad to stop and try again going slower.

The second month we added in herbs, samento and houttinaya. Then I went 2 months herbs only. Now I'm on herbs and rifampin for bart, and then probably adding back in some doxy.

I was herding bad the last couple of days from rifampin full dose. Epsom baths really help me and lots of lemon water.

Whenever I see post like this it makes me wonder if this is why so many don't get well. People experience herxing and then back off.

It's no pain no gain with Lyme.

I already know the responses. "No, herxing too much is bad, you have to find a balance".

Well what's "too much" ?

I agree ride it out and weather the storm. Don't let these mother fathers off the hook by backing off.

Antibiotics do kill bacteria in the blood and has the ability to temporarily suppress the microbe. Which is s good thing as a piece of the bigger puzzle.

I take herbs with my abx. So it can do what the abx can't. And that's get in all the nooks and crannies. Non-resistent. Boost immune function. Reduce inflammation. Bust cyst. Protect cells from damage, and the list goes on and on.

I would not recommend anyone with Lyme to take abx alone.

If you're getting side effects from most or all abx - then it's not likely side effects.
Did you get these side effects when you took abx prior to having Lyme?

I know I didn't . But I have to admit - when I'm hurting - I do sometimes question it too.

This is my problem. The side effects feel like an adverse reaction from the drug.

The side effects tend to go away after the drug leaves my system. But maybe it is hitting Lyme until then? I have no way of really knowing.

The side effects are scary though cause it can be a dull pain around my chest area. I wish there was a way to know for sure what's going on.

Also on flagyl it made my chest hurt after just 1-2 doses and kept me up for 24+ hours. It also almost feels like organ failure to me like my kidneys aren't working or something but I did get tested by the doctor so if that was true I'm sure they'd likely pick that up.

So both abx caused symptoms in the chest area?

That does sound like a dieoff reaction.

Not sure if it's likely that both abx would cause the same side effects?
But maybe it's possible.

I did notice the doxy pills I'm taking disolvd very quick too which makes me wonder if that could part of the problem. Maybe I didn't drink enough water or something when taking it but I'm not sure.

I guess so but it's still scary symptoms. Makes it almost hard to breath while going through the side effects sometimes.

Also on flagyl it was so bad I could barely even sit. It was kind of like torture until the drug left my system.

Take the non-antibacterial herbs. The herbs that are only supportive.

Take the non-antibacterial herbs. The herbs that are only supportive.

What types are those?

Last night I took milk thistle so that's one I know about at least.

Could a herx feel like organ pain for 2-3 days?

I'm not saying it isn't but it just seems odd. Maybe in theory a lot of Lyme can be situated in a specific area of the body or something.

500mg 2x a day is a huge dose! I think given your reactions, you should start much lower. I started 100mg 1x a day, then up to 100 2x a day. Some people go up to 400mg a day, but I've never heard of a 1000mg a day. I would be flat on back with that dosage! I think you should check with the doctor - someone may have read the script wrong. It happens.

You're not taking 500 mg twice a day of Doxy are you? 1000 mg total?

That's too high - way too high.

It was my first antibiotic - and I started out full dose 200 mg twice daily. Day 4 I was herxing - with back pain that I had never had before.
I stopped for a couple of days before resuming.

The dose is 200 mg twice daily for total 400 mg. Are you sure you were prescribed that amount?

Are you talking about Flagyl? That's the dosage for Flagyl.

Still getting occasional side pains but definitely less than last night. I imagine as the drug clears from my system I'll get more back to normal.
