One of the things I've had to completely give up since I got sick is alcohol. I think there is a close parallel between alcohol intolerance and exercise intolerance.
There have been studies that show cfs/me patients have increased gut flora in their blood stream following exercise when compared to controls (something I think the Lyme community suffers with as well).

Also, there are studies that show how alcohol can increase bacteria in the blood stream thereby increasing the level of endotoxins you are dealing with. Though this study references binge drinking I believe the chronic illness community has a significantly reduced threshold so 1 beer for us=8 for a healthy individual.

In either case your body is working to clear your blood stream just as it would if you had an infection. Your literally sick from what's floating around in your blood. Additionally if your fighting an infection your body is already dealing with some level of inflammation and oxidative stress. This oxidative stress is compounded when your body metabolizes alcohol likely causing an exponential amount of damage when compared to someone that is healthy.
