mpost~The info is good so please do not take my concerns to be at odds with worthwhile research. It's just that these wonderful research places keep popping up with so many patients "NOW" excited that a cure is soon to be & yet the merry-go-round continues with patients sick; doctors/hospitals, etc saying the "disease" or autoimmune, whatever you want to call it, doesn't exist.
There are some very wonderful, good researchers & doctors who are in earnest. But patients should also always check to make sure that the foxes aren't in charge of the hen house.
And why oh why is it that no matter how excellent man is with his labs (!), there are always, always monkeys, mice, etc escaping with deadly pathogens?? It ain't just in the movies!
As one of the docs mentioned in the original post works for the National lab, Tulane, it should be noted that this lab, & many others have not only done their darn best in researching, but also have been flagged by the cdc(uh, their friends) for violations of letting lose dangerous pathogens.
Some cherry picked excerpts from: "Deadly bacteria release sparks concern at Louisiana lab"
"The first indication of trouble came in early November, when Tulane staff discovered two sick macaques kept among 4,000 animals in a huge outdoor breeding colony on the compound's South Campus...
The Tulane incident involves the release, possibly in November or earlier, of a bacterium called Burkholderia pseudomallei, which is primarily found in Southeast Asia and northern Australia and is spread to humans and animals...
Yet at least four monkey-like rhesus macaques — that were never used in the experiments and were kept in large outdoor cages in another part of the 500-acre facility...Two of the macaques became ill in November; both eventually had to be euthanized. Meanwhile, a federal investigator, who became ill 24 hours after visiting the facility in January as part of the ongoing release investigation, has also tested positive for exposure to the bacteria...
Tulane's research, which has been halted by federal officials, was part of an effort to develop a vaccine against the bacteria....

One more re this lab:
"Dangerous Bacteria Mysteriously Escapes From Louisiana Monkey Lab"
Here's my favorite part:
"...a potentially deadly strain of bacteria escaped from a primate research lab infecting four monkeys is a mystery, government officials said, but they added the incident poses no threat to the public."

Deadly yes, but not a concern. "Hard to catch, easy to cure!"
And not to draw any parallel, but interesting re labs researching to help man...yet also, not.
