Disability tax credit in Canada

Hello all,

Wondering if any of you Canadians have had luck with the DTC? My application was recently declined, but I know of some folks with lyme who have had their app. approved-so it is possible. I just can't seem to get much info. from them-another forum. Approval is based on the effects of impairment and not the impairment itself. I'm going to get a copy of my doctor's portion of the application because I don't know what she wrote. Despite being supportive she must not have "worded" it properly to express the severity of my symptoms and how they impact the quality of my life...We owe the government money that we can't afford to pay back and they are threatening to garnish my CPP disability benefits, we are living hand to mouth, and I don't want to give any more money to lawyers. What would be really helpful is to see an example of a successfully filled out form. My brain is mush from just writing this post, and the thought of taking this on is frustrating and overwhelming, but we don't have a choice in the matter-child one is in 1st year university...one more to go.....yaddah yaddah yadah. Any feedback would be much appreciated.

I'm in Ottawa. I use turbo tax too! With regards to CPP disability You do not have to pay back any money, when you turn 65, your disability benefit will automatically be converted to a retirement pension. Go to resolutelegal.ca and have them send you a booklet that describes how to maximize your chances of getting approved. I found it really helpful and was approved on my first try. Unlike this tax credit bs. I'm not giving up though, it's the least they can do considering................don't think I need to tell you! Let me know if you have any questions.

No, in fact they will go as far back as 10 years and apply the tax credit accordingly- money in your pocket. When my application for CPP was approved I received a retroactive payment as well as future monthly payments. I'm not sure what your financial situation is like but considering how much money we have to spend out of pocket for diagnosis and treatment...we are definitely entitled to these supports. I was finally diagnosed in Nov. 2017 after 9 years and am receiving treatment (antibiotic, antiviral........) I'm hoping that I will be able to return to work too. I'm only 46. I may have to change careers but I'm ok with that. In the mean time I'm grateful to be receiving LTD, CPP dis., and eventually the tax credit. How long have you been sick? I was previously diagnosed with CFS.
