I dont miss sugar/sweets at all. Salt is my addiction. Not to sound sexiest, but sugar seems to be harder for women to quit. I have no idea if salt is more of a guy thing or not, or a hypo thyroid connection. I've craved salt my entire life it seems like.
Man, I'm the same way with salt! I've craved it and salted most foods all my life.
A couple of weeks ago, I was having a terrible problem with restless legs. I'd already been taking epsom salt baths and Natural Calm magnesium powder, so I didn't think that was the problem. I tried some homeopathic remedies - which did nothing. I already had/have sleep issues, so the restless legs were making everything worse.
One of the many things I read online, over several days, was that perhaps low potassium could be causing the restless legs. But, potassium is in so many foods (which is why it's usually low in supplements - even dedicated potassium supplements) that I doubted that to be the case. But, that idea was still in the back of my mind.
Over the next day or so, as I was getting ready to add a few inches of salt to a meal, I thought about
the sodium/potassium relationship. I considered that, if my potassium might was low and contributing to the restless legs, perhaps I should halt my salt intake and let my potassium levels "catch-up," over the coming days.
Well, whether coincidence or causation, my restless legs did settle-down.
It's been a few weeks, now, and I'm still not adding any salt to foods. But, now, I've been having some weird heart flutters. Now, I'm wondering is a little more salt might be warranted.
As I'm still jobless, I'm cooking nearly every meal at home. When I buy packaged/canned products (broths, beans, diced tomatoes, etc.), I get the "low-sodium" varieties. My thinking has been that, since sodium is so prevalent in many diets, I would buy no-salt-added foods and just add my own. That way, it would taste saltier, as the salt is on the surface. Many high-sodium foods don't actually taste salty.
Perhaps it's time for a big bag of salty potato chips! Though, it's also been a few weeks, since I took any magnesium. But, potato chips sound more appealing!
