Difference between herx and allergic reaction

I'm like 90 percent sure I'm allergic to samento. How do you know the difference ?

Samento is TAO free Cat's Claw - one way is to look up the side effects of Cat's Claw. The common ones are are dizziness, IBS, nausea. I am allergic to regular Cat's Claw and I just feel off taking it even if it is only a few drops.
Ofcourse you feel off if you are herxing too so it is hard to know. But if you react to only a small amount I would take it to be an allergy reaction.
Find a substitute if you can and stop taking it. Allergies are hard on the immune system so you are better off without it.

Often an allergy will happen pretty much immediately, sudden onset. (not always though) - but herxes generally take a little more time - as a herx means that bacteria has been killed off and the resulting endotoxins are causing inflammation in your body.
But some people do report herxing within a few hours of taking their antibiotics...or herbs.

Allergies can also happen over time...making it difficult to determine.


Some common signs of allergies:

hives, itching,skin rash,diarrhea, vomiting.

(of course we can have those with herxing, too)



If you think it might be an allergic reaction - best to stop it...let the symptoms subside.

allergies happen immediately, let's say within 30mins -1h after u take it. herxes usually start later. but u are right there are some similarities, it all has to do with the immune system being overwhelmed with things it reacts to.

generally after a herx u feel better than before. after an allergic attack u do not.

if u have same reaction on multiple drugs/herbs that have nothing to do with each other other than they are antibacterial or stimmulate the immune function, chances are it's a herx. you cannot just be allergic to everything, no ?

Herxing can happen immediately as well. I've had some that build up a d some that happen within minutes. Usually it builds up a d then each additional dose happens within minutes. As if there's a threshold you have to get to. But regardless, this is usually not so difficult. A herx will be similar to the symptoms of your own disease, will be dose dependent, and provided enough time will generally go away as your body detoxes.

I usually get my herx immediately after ingesting a certain bactericidal / antifungal / antiviral / antiparasitic substance. Sometimes I takes 30 minutes to 1 hour to really kick in though.

seriously ? unless u take that bactericidal as an IV, i cannot understand how u can herx after 30 minutes. it does not even get into your bloodstream in that short of a time ....


i remember when i first took antibiotics and had acute untreated lyme, so i had bacteremia. after 2-2.5h i started experiencing shortness of breath, hi pulse, extreme tiredness ... but it always took a solid 2h before anything happened ... i was taking clarithromycin and amoxicillin.

The herx is caused by the bacteria die-off - endotoxins that flood your system causing inflammation/cytokine cascade

I don’t know if that can happen within a few minutes of taking abx - maybe 30 though. IDK

A herx can also be new symptoms appearing.

Cberg, if you aren't sure if it is an allergy, and if you are nervous about it, before abandoning the herb try buying a dry powdered form of it without any other substances in it. Then, find an allergist to test you. They can take the powdered herb and use it for skin testing, just like you would do with food. Just don't bring the allergist a tincture due to it having alcohol in it.

I found this to be the best way to settle my mind regarding allergies to these meds/supplements, especially since breathing difficulty has been one of my major symptoms with or without the meds/supplements. It really helped settle my mind.

I'll try but nights like tonight it's hard not to give up, joints feel like rocks rubbing together and muscles are spasming , it's hell on earth
