Does anyone else have swallowing issues with lyme & co? I can swallow water or food & the flap in the back that directs my windpipe to close can sometimes be delayed & that which I'm swallowing will "go down the wrong pipe." At times this has caused some very serious, scary choking.

Does anyone else deal with this? Is there anything that can be done? I'm tired of this disease taking over so many areas of my life! At least I'm assuming this is what is causing this....

Yes I had it - didn’t know what it was - hadn’t been diagnosed yet.

I even choked on my saliva sometimes.

At that time I also had the sensation of a lump in my throat.

Me also, and it was scary.

I know its difficult but try to relax as best you can and try not to panic. You want to keep your muscles etc relaxed and not tense up.

Make sure to tell your llmd about this.

Buhner recommends for swallowing difficulty on p 221 in "Healing Lyme" 2nd edition to use Ailanthus altissimisa tincture,5 - 10 drops 4X daily.

I have never tried this and I am not an medical expert. Just letting you know what he suggests in the book.

OK, thank you for confirming. I thought it was related to 1 of these diseases. Yes, i choke on salvia too. This has come & gone for years now & I could never figure it out. I just received diagnosis last year. Crazy! Choking on your own saliva! Swallow much? haha And I just placed a huge order for herbs. Guess I'll see about ordering that as well.

At least I know it is related to bart or bab, so I have something to target with my herbs. Babesia seems to be what is flaring up for me right now, so that gives me some clues as to what herbs to increase. Thanks!

I never choked, but I did have the delayed swallowing mechanism. For me, it occurred randomly over the years since my symptoms first started. One or more of the infections cause autonomic dysfunction, and I suspect this falls into that category. I had similar issues with feeling like my heart was beating out of sync and feeling like my breathing rhythm wasn't right. Breathing, heartbeat, and swallowing are all automatic body function that, under normal circumstances, happen without us being consciously aware.

Yes, one of many symptoms I've had and one of the most persistent. Lump in the throat (not always noticeable but always there to some degree), having to concentrate to perform a swallow sometimes - at first I'd get anxious and try to swallow repeatedly, not helpful lol...never choking on food really but fluids have gone down the wrong pipe often enough to be noticeable; also saliva a few times.

As mentioned above it seems to be an ANS issue, as my major remaining symptoms are all sorta nervous system related.

Where do you buy Ailanthus altissimisa? I did not find it at Woodland. :/

I've had the swallowing issues too. Mine are a little different. I can almost feel it coming on at this point. I get a weird fullness in my throat (mostly but not all the time) and it's usually the last bite of food. My swallowing ability gets weak or is not there. Oddly though I've never choked. I have to do a lot of clearing and the food goes down. It's really freaky and weird and I'm sorry you're experiencing difficulties with it as well. I think mine was better when I was on Mepron so maybe I need to go back to it! Sorry I don't know where to get the herb.

Kitkate, that's interesting that you can feel it coming on. I occasionally having trouble swallowing food, almost like the food is too dry, but the issue that is disturbing to me is when it "goes down the wrong pipe."

I had this. It was very scary. Mine went away fairly shortly into abx treatment, but also as I was treating the candida overgrowth.

Yes, i have trouble swallowing as well.. To make a long story short when i first got sick it just started out as always feeling like i always had something stuck in my throat.. Over the coarse of many years it got worse and had a few scares where my throat completely closed up while i was eating.. One time the food got stuck in my throat so i drank some water thinking it would just go down.. Well that's when my throat completely closed up with food and water in it.. It was awful i couldnt breathe at all and i couldnt get it to come up or go down i literally thought i was going to die.. Ever since then i know i have to be extremely careful when i eat.. I do notice especially with certain foods like rice.. Anyways.. Desert Tortoise Botanicals sells Ailanthus altissima tincture that Buhner recommends..

Hi! I'm not on here much, but saw your post. I have had swallowing issues that have waxed and waned for the last 10 yrs. Worst with mixed consistency foods, like solid cereal with liquid milk, broth based soups. Finally was tested last yr. Muscles sometimes aren't coordinated as result of Lyme neuro effects. What helps is to keep chin tucked in while swallowing. I choke most if I look upward while eating. The chin tucking is what speech therapists teach people with neuro issues to do to avoid aspirating (having food or liquids accidently go into lungs). After awhile it becomes a habit.
I have recently noticed my pills get stuck, too. I take less at a time, followed by water and a bite of bulky food. Hope this helps people!

I have found Alianthus helps, it lessens severity, but does not completely cure it. At least not right away.

Anyone have a complete resolution with these issues on antibiotics or herbs?
