I keep reading that you're supposed to drink PURE water, but no source explains exactly what that is. The best I can gather is it's filtered water - whatever your water source is passed through a filter.

Can anyone recommend a proven, effective water filter for drinking water?

Shower filter?

This is what we use for drinking water. My wife says she can taste when it's time to replace the filter. I cannot. But, it seems to do fine.

We got our filter eons ago from Amway. Now hubby gets the filters for it from Lowe's, I think. I can smell the difference in our tap water and the filtered.

I lived with well water 30 years ago and colored my hair. The iron in the well water always turned my hair color weird. I got a shower filter for this reason. Actually what I did was offer to be a "Research and Development" person for a company that was manufacturing shower filters. It was one that had a charcoal filter and when you first installed it you had to run it awhile because the water was black.

I don't worry so much about the shower, but I will never not have filtered water in my kitchen.

It takes a long time to fill a pot, but at least I know I am cooking in good water.

If you can get a subscription to Consumer's Reports, you can check to see what is the best this year. Or find a friend that has a subscription and ask them to research for you.

We had a reverse osmosis system (installed under sink) in our last house which had well water. We also had a whole house carbon filter and installed berkey shower filters.

We just moved and now have city water. Currently I am using an Aquasana filter for drinking water. I'm having a bit of analysis paralysis on what permanent filters to install. Reverse osmosis removes everything from water including the good stuff so many systems now have a cartridge that adds back in minerals like calcium and magnesium. I'm not sure how I feel about this and I'm always worried that I'll do more harm when I'm trying to do something good! Plus I have to pay for it! The companies I'm looking at right now are aquasana and pelican. My goal is to do a whole house system (to remove contaminants for showering) and then a Point of Use system for cooking/drinking.

Also, our skin is our largest organ and we absorb/inhale a lot when showering. At least when you drink it you have a built in filtering mechanism (kidneys). Not that you should drink bad water (-:

There's really no gold standard filter that I can find. I hope someone is an expert here!

If you go with this one I would recommend getting the unit that has the on demand pitcher as well as the extra one that you can put in the fridge.

Reverse Osmosis wastes a lot of water so i don't like that approach.

ZeroWater is a 5 stage filtration process and removes fluoride as well you can look it up on Amazon good product.

I bought a Sprite shower filter from Lowe's last year since I was going to be taking epsom salt baths. I don't know how well it works.

I've never used a filter for drinking water. I'm living with a relative. She gets well water from her husband's property for drinking and cooking since her city water has a lot of chlorine. I'd figured the well water was safe since it tasted cleaner than any water I'd ever had before, but I'm thinking I should still be filtering it.

I've been using the following two Aquasana products for approximately 10 years:

Shower Filter:

While not based on any scientific data, they seem to work well for me.

I like what k07 had to say (above) about "analysis paralysis" and being worried about doing harm when actually trying to do something good. Wise observations.

We can drive ourselves crazy with trying to find "THE" perfect ________. (fill in the blank) But, as the old saying goes: Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good. ANY filtering you do will almost certainly be an improvement over not filtering.

There are hundreds of options. So, to narrow the field, you could set a maximum budget and then reject anything outside of your spending limit. Then, further reduce the choices by deciding the type of application: countertop, under-counter, whole-house, etc. Once you narrow-down the choices to less than a dozen, you can then look online and compare their published data to see which one does a better job.

Or, if money isn't an issue, you could go off the deep end with something like this! smile

Reverse osmosis is the PURE water you're looking for. Yes, it wastes water. RO systems has to send the toxic heavy metals, disinfectants, microorganisms, organic and inorganic contaminants down the drain.

Some systems are better than others at conserving water.

RO strips all GOOD minerals too. So if you drink it you should probably add some trace mineral drops in. I now have the aquasana 3-stage under the sink with separate faucet. It’s not perfectly clean but much better than unfiltered yet retains the good minerals. It tastes clean to me and I’m a bit of a water snob!

Some of the newer RO systems now have mineral cartridges to add minerals back in. For some reason I don’t trust this. I guess my concern is mineral quantities and quality.

They now make a counter reverse osmosis system. Its called Aqua-true.

I also have an ozonator!

Call me cheap. But when I want pure water I take one of my pressure cookers and add a copper tube to it.

Think of distilling good ALCOHOL. Same principal. All of the impuries are left behind.

My son made a rotten batch of beer one time. So, showed him how to convert a pressure cooker into a distiller. BIG MISTAKE.

After distilling the beer, the alcohol burned blue.

As for myself I have some plastic bottle which I leave out in the sun. We are on a well and although I have had the water tested, mama won't let chlorinate out 4,000 gal water tank. So, I don't drink the water unless I sterilize it with sunlight. Have to use plastic bottles to do this.

As for mama she buys store water for drinking.

Find a cheap pressure cooker, remove the vent which goes to the weight, add a copper tube, put a coil in it and put the coil into a bucket with some water and ice. Turn on the hot plate and let it distill your water.

Thank You Dude, I will check it out. Can you believe they dont sell distilled water here? They have plenty of places that sell you spring water but no one sells distilled (so it must be the healthiest way to consume it! LOL). Maybe it just never caught on.

Cool idea on the pressure cooker distiller. There are some vids on youtube on this that I am gonna check out that have done this. Thanks for the idea.

The plastic bottle in the sun doesnt sound so good unless its a plastic number 2 or 5 as all the other plastics would surely leach when heated. I am not certain I even trust the 2 or 5 when heated. A glass jar might be better?

That does seem odd that you can't find distilled water there. Like you said, maybe it never caught-on. Maybe they never tried it. This might be your chance to start your own water distillation company!

Oh wow this is an old thread. A year ago lol. I was just gonna say I just buy purified water by the gallon. Can't afford a water filter built into the sink.

Reverse osmosis is the best for sure.

Also, if you're on a budget and are just looking to remove fluoride, you can add 1 gram of holy basil leaves (about 6 leaves) per 35 oz of water. Leave it in for 30 minutes and the leaves will absorb about ~67% of the fluoride.

Remove the leaves before drinking (because they now hold the fluoride).

Please note that having purified water means nothing if you're drinking teas. Teas are known to contain significant amounts of fluoride due to the way they are grown in fluoride containing soil.

So that's where the holy basil leaves trick comes in to play smile

Since someone bumped my old thread, I figured I would update.

I actually waited a long time to buy a filter as I had analysis paralysis and got overwhelmed. I bought an Aquagear pitcher. I ordered directly from the company. Has 6 mth filters. Water tastes clean, but I did no before and after testing to know what’s in the tap water or whether the filter is removing anything. Can definitely tell a difference in the smell and taste.

I looked into home use distillers and there wasn't anything good enough/long lasting enough quality wise for me unless it was semi-commercial unit in the thousands.

If you live in a urban or suburban area and carrying distilled from the store for drinking isn't feasible have it delivered 5 gallon jugs like spring water for offices. The price is usually the same as delivered spring and they will supply with or you can buy a dispenser, either room temp or hot cold version.

And for the folks who think think distilled water is deadly that's an old wives tail. You get plenty minerals in your food and from other liquids. Been drinking distilled for over 10 year with no issues.

I had one of those PUR refrigerator cooler filter/dispensers, but after awhile I couldn't afford the filters so it was just more like a water cooler with a dispenser. It would take a long time to percolate while cooling the water. It filters some stuff, but I don't think it gets rid of flouride. I just refill from the city water now, not too bad.

https://www.zerowater.com/ has away to search your city zip code and it will tell you the particulate (total dissolved solids) level of your local tap water.

I would suggest you purchase a pressure cooker. Then go to any plumbing shop and have them build a condensing coil for it.

This would allow you to make all the distilled water you would want. Cost would probaly be under 100 bucks.

As an aside, a pressure cooker can cook food, can food, be used to sterilize surgical tools, make bed sheets into steril bandages, etc.

Every home should have one, as it can also sterilze water if need be.
