Hi everyone,
Wondering if anyone could give me some advice or helpful information. I have lyme and so does my daughter. It is frustrating because she gives up so easily with all that is necessary with this illness and so she will not follow the diet or take all of the necessary medicines and supplements and such. Sometimes she will agree and other times she will not. I try to be patient because I know how overwhelming it all is. But the worst part is seeing her depression, anxirty, (and now newly social anxiety). I filled a prescription for Wellbutrin. I am hesitant to use it but since she won't take the time to do all of the other necessary modalities which could lift this. I am thinking of having her take it because it is fast acting. This is all to much for me. I could deal with my illness but seeing her like she is, well that is really to much. Also does anyone know if Dr. H prescribes antidepressants for Lyme patients? Wondering if you could also take herbal lyme protocols while on Wellbutrin?

Question unrelated to the above. I know this was talked about in previous posts but don't see as of late..anyone know of any success with Samento Banderol? THank you. So glad I have this form of support as unfortunately some of my immediate family does not understand this.

Is this a young daughter ie a child?

I don’t know about Dr H but Dr J does prescribe antidepressants.
It’s part of the support he feels is required. According to him, we need to support our bodies - pain, sleep, mood etc or our immune system won’t work optimally.

She is young daughter..Does Dr J also recommend herbs as part of his protocol with antidepressants? Ty.

It really depends how old your daughter is. I have tried every antidepressant and Wellbutrin was not effective at all. If she is older I would try something like Zoloft or Lexapro. Those are effective for depression and general anxiety disorder. I would choose Zoloft over Lexapro because I personally found Zoloft more effective, but everyone is different. You will have to research what medications kids can take. I *think* Zoloft should be allowed since they allow it for pregnant women but I don't know.

I have been hospitalized twice for depression and sent to outpatient twice for depression. The ONLY medication that has worked is Cymbalta but I don't think kids can take that.

It also depends how bad her anxiety is. I haven't found anything to relieve the anxiety. The depression has been fixed but my anxiety is still really bad. I think the anxiety part is just the inflamed nervous system. Other people have success with herbs etc for anxiety.

I would not worry about interactions between Wellbutrin and herbs. But you can google "herbal interactions Wellbutrin" and something should come up.

The reason for the Wellbutrin is because it works on different receptors than Zoloft. I read a article by one LLMD that for many Lyme patients serotonin enhancing drugs made their depression worse..and that wellbutrin or a drug like retalin was more effective..what are your thoughts on that? and anyone else for that matter...I always read that if you have pots that wellbutrin is a good medication for symtom relief ...not sure what to think.

Is your daughter being treated for babesia? I think babesia causes a lot of anxiety and depression. The thing is though, if your daughter does have babesia, and you are treating it, her symptoms probably would get temporarily worse. Bartonella can also cause anxiety.

It sounds like the biggest problem is that your daughter isn't agreeing to the treatment. Depending on how old your daughter is, it might help to have her doctor spell everything out to her, that XYZ is going to help her to feel better. Also, you do have to be careful that your daughter isn't getting an allergy or something, if something actually makes her feel worse.

The thing is to start thing slowly, and start the most important things first, so it's not like you're being overloaded. I is really depressing with Lyme, when you feel like treating won't help- I had to make myself do it anyway.

I don't know about anti depressants- I had BAD anxiety and depression as a child, but I never took anti depressants or anything. I really don't know. I do know they can have side effects so, you have to balance the benefits with the side effects, and also keep in mind- the withdrawal symptoms on some of them can be really bad.

Dr H did prescribe antidepressants for me, namely Cymbalta. The reason he suggested that one was it is also supposed to help with neuropathic pain, which was something that was tormenting me into physical and mental oblivion. Dr H has the same philosophy that Girlie mentioned Dr J has, it is critical for patient to find ways to sleep, manage pain and stress. Obviously if you can avoid antidepressants that is ideal, but if symptoms are too much they can be a good tool to try out.

I hope your daughter will come around and embrace treatment. It's a difficult journey but getting well is very much possible but patient does have to commit. Maybe there is a possibility that the antidepressant could help stabilize her moods, making it easier for her to commit to the rest of treatment?
