This was one of my BIG questions after being diagnosed with Borrelia Burgdorferi and Bartonella.
After starting my Lyme treatment, I told my PCP that had cut out Gluten, sugar, caffeine, etc. I made the decision to do this on my own, based on information I'd read. She was a little concerned. Her concern was that if I was too strict with my diet (at first), I wouldn't know if I was feeling better because I was taking Doxy or if my body liked my new diet. So, I stopped the diet after two weeks, and I didn't notice any difference.
After talking to my LLMD, she said that eating normal is OK, but try to cut out sugar and beer. I'm not a big drinker, but I do like my sugar. She also said that Stevia is a good sugar substitute to use. Apparently, it doesn't make the Lyme bacteria as happy as real sugar. I have cut way back on sugar. I haven't noticed any difference, but I feel this change is fairly easy and a healthy change, overall.
You mentioned stevia. Is this a special type of stevia or is it just any kind? Because I've read that many stevia brands that are commonly sold in stores are just as processed as sugar. But maybe it's not the processing that matters, maybe it's the fact that its just different than sugar? I would like more insight on that. And also what was said about
fruit sugar or honey? I know everyone is different, but I'm just trying to get some different perspectives.
