Hi all,
I was researching posts for chronic muscle and tendon pain which I have in multiple areas (shoulders, feet, calves, neck, back). I wanted to just quickly clarify one point.
Massage or any other aggressive body work, depending on the amount of pressure applied and frequency, does NOT kill bacteria. The amount of oxygen that is stimulated and moved into those areas is not enough to kill bacteria, who hide in thick biofilm layers, parasites in deep into tissue, nerve, bone cells etc.
The increase in symptoms is due to a release of toxins from fatty tissue, muscle tissue etc, mainly endo and neurotoxins. I think it's important that we recognize the mechanisms in which we feel worse and understand the processes behind this. The reason I stress this is due to the fact understanding not every modality kills bacteria. It may facilitate the movement of oxygen or increase the production of ATP, etc. Often times we are depleted, with little to no stores of additional energy to produce the calming, healing effects of massage- this backfires a lot in patients like us.
Just wanted to bring this to light.
