Son Has a Metallic Taste When Drinking Water

Good morning, all -

My son complains of a metallic taste whenever he drinks water during "on weeks". He says this phenomena occurs within minutes of taking his medication. As a result, he doesn't really drink water during this time. I know. Bad idea.

Anyone know the cause and how to get rid of the horrible taste? Lyme has made him extremely taste and smell sensitive.

You said this happens during his "one weeks". What does this mean? That he only takes the meds on certain weeks? I don't remember how what I was on but I distinctly remember one of my meds in the past 2 years made my mouth taste metallicy. It wasn't only when I drank water but it def gave a metal taste within 15 minutes of taking it.

I have no idea about why he has those problems, but have you tried a water filter?

Hi Wisco woman - Yes. His protocol consists of taking ABX for 2 weeks and then off 2 weeks. He happily drinks water on his off weeks but when he is taking ABX he detests the taste of H2O. Thanks for sharing you have had the experience, too.


Deep_Sleep - Good idea but we have a filter that doesn't help him. Bottled water, tap water, filtered water it is all metallic and disgusting to him. Good grief.

Biaxin (clarithromycin) does cause a metallic taste in your mouth. My LLMD said to crew gum.
Maybe other Rx is same family does the same.

Here are the things that come to mind, though you've probably already considered them:

1. Flavor the water (lemon, lime, etc.)
2. Drink non-caffeinated, flavored teas
3. Chew a couple of pieces of gum before drinking the plain water (I like Spry cinnamon)
4. Brush teeth and tongue before drinking water
5. Try holding ice on the tongue long enough to dull the taste buds before drinking water
6. How about a different water source, such as mineral/sparkling water?
7. Switch him from water to vodka (just kidding)

Hey Tick bite - Yep. That's what he did this morning. Gum and water. Thanks for the tip.

Dude - We have tried almost all your suggestions but the vodka. He liked that one. He used Spry gum this morning it helped a bit.

I figured you'd already tried most everything.

The only other idea is to juice some ginger, garlic, and horseradish; mix them together; then swish/gargle with them for three full minutes. Then, he will happily drink water!

Tickbite- I think that's the med that did it to me too...I liked that the clarithromycin didn't dissolve instantly in my tongue like some drugs...it had no real taste but after taking it I would get that metal taste.

One of the abx gave me a metal taste - might have also been Biaxin

But I don’t think Dr J’s clinic prescribes Biaxin - not that I’ve seen.
And I think that’s where her son goes??

My girlfriend had the exact same issue with Clarythromicyn.
Doctor ended up switching her over to Azythromycin (I believe) for that reason.

Alxander - I think you are onto something. My son doesn't take Biaxin but he does take a drug out of the macrolide class - Azithromycin. A search on Azithromycin did show a side effect being a change in taste and on some websites referencing a metallic taste. The phenomena is called Dysgeusia.

Girlie - Yep. He goes to Dr. J, too. All four of us do and we all go back in early Jan. Fingers crossed we all move onto Bart.

Lymelearner - sorry you have experienced the sensation, too. Why can't it taste like glazed donuts instead?

Do you think you'll be doing a 'regular' bart treatment...or the one I'm on with persisters?
I guess it depends on a few things - ie maybe how long you were infected before treatment, how you are now - how you've responded to treatment thus far.....and if you need to do the more risky persistent drugs...

If you can't tolerate the 5 days in a row persisters...reducing it to three days is a big difference re: herxing (or side effects)
