dmw52 - I learned it all over several years. Several different techniques too, some from you tube and some in person at various chiros who do more than crack joints. I created hybrid techniques of my own design too, which work.
If you goggle muscle release trigger point myofacial astroman in our goggle bar, many old posts should appear.
I did this before lyme treatment and after. It improved faster after my 14 months of ABX, but was not automatically healing- it needed help.
For starters look up the Trigger point manual by Clare Davies, covers the whole body. A PT showed this to me in 2006 and said go buy it, so I did.. That was my beginning point. Its static held pressure under one minute if you can stand it that long. Alone, you need to be creative, using small diameter release tools and gravity or body weight. Its not overnight, becomes part of your daily routine. Without it, my life would have sucked way worse than it did pain wise.

Some chiros do Active Release Technique which is kind of a combination of triggerpoint anchoring blended with short movements. My health ins covered it under chiro, they need to be creative with the codes to get coverage.
The only thing I never tried was regular acupuncture and this new "cupping", which is the direct opposite of trigger point pressure release. Dry needling certainly was a waist of time and money- hurts too.
