Ok so I had lyme and brain fog horribly when I was in college just a few years ago. So I completely get how hard it is to try to study with all of this going on. Firstly anytime I hear brain fog I always recommend getting tested for food allergies and yeast, because these often walk hand in hand with lyme (thank you antibiotics) and these can worsen the brain fog from lyme. Once I got those two under control I found my brain fog greatly diminished. However, while you are still dealing with it here are a few tips I found helpful.

1. Muscle Memory- this is something that helps students with adhd and can be beneficial to anyone dealing with memory issues. By using your entire body to study it helps the brain place whatever you are studying into your long-term memory. Most of us with brain fog seem to have a worse time keeping our short term memory. Some ways you can do this is by bouncing a ball (between your hands or off the floor/wall),running laps, or anything else repetitive while you study. For example you are trying to learn how to spell cat - every time you bounce the ball off the floor you say a letter. *bounce* C *bounce* A *bounce*T *bounce* CAT, or instead of a letter say a word: *bounce* the *bounce* declaration *bounce* was *bounce* signed *bounce* in 1776. One of my personal favs was reading over my notes while on a stationary bike. Its all about repetitive movements.

2. scent and sound- chew a certain kind of candy or gum while you study and use the same flavor during the test. this works best if it is something you don't use all the time because you brain will connect that scent/ taste with the memory of you studying. peppermint seems to be one of the best but since I actually eat them frequently I liked to eat lemon drops. Just like a scent can trigger your long term memory sounds can play a similar role. However listening to the same song while studying and taking a test is usually something that is not allowed because teachers think your cheating. However, if you can put what you're studying to music that is always a great way to put those facts into long term memory. Check out the historyteachers version of holla back girl about the bubonic plague. Its hilarious and also the only way I know how to spell bubonic LOL

3. Color and shape: highlighters are your friend! unless you just have to have an entire passage rote memorized then learn to focus on the important facts. Example: key words - red, vocab - blue, definitions- yellow, dates - green; or main idea - red, supporting facts- blue, conclusion yellow. Some people remember important words by tracing around the shape they make. This is mostly beneficial with multiple choice tests.
