Can there be liver damage or involvement with Lyme?

Can the liver be affected with Lyme disease? My mother is a bit jaundice, can any of these co-infections (bab, bart, anaplasmosis or Q fever) cause jaundice? The family doctor hasn't done liver function tests, she is to see a GI doctor in a week, so hopefully he will, just don't know if he is familiar with Lyme. I am assuming the jaundice will go away once the infections are properly killed off? Thank you

It's very unlikely that a GI specialist is at all familiar with Lyme, but any doctor can diagnose jaundice and run a metabolic panel (CMP) to check for liver abnormalities. You are right to worry about jaundice! The liver can be compromised in Lyme for many reasons, including being overloaded by meds and supplements, and also being overloaded by endotoxins from bacterial die-off. What kind of treatment has she been doing lately? Is she having other liver symptoms - upper right quadrant pain, pale stools? A lot of people take milk thistle to protect the liver during treatment. Also make sure her bowels are moving at least once per day.

No, she isn't having any other liver involvement, just the jaundice. She is on herbals for Lyme, bab, and bart from Beyond Balance through her LLND. Would liver detox help? Any suggestions?

Part of the thorough physical exam that my LLMD (DrJ) is he palpates the liver to feel for swelling because lyme and co’s - particularly Babesia affects the liver and often patients will have a swollem liver that can be felt.

So, in a nutshell, her liver can indeed be affected.

A while ago I got over a very good book by an author Anthony Williams. Its about how all calamities are more or less due to the liver. I recommend it if you really want to know everything there is to know about the liver, there were some info in there that really has helped me already...

Most liver issues With people who otherwise take care of themselves, are due to genes.

When were killing off stuff with anabiotic’s or herbals it’s hard on the liver that’s why you hear people talking about detoxing the liver all the time.

There’s a problem with this though, it doesn’t work for everyone because some people that have certain liver detox phase 2 genes affecting detoxing and will always have a problem with detoxing - which that can cause Jaindice as it did with me.

There are two specific supplements that can help with these genetic pathways. Number one - Sam-e, Problem with this is it affects the brains amino acids so you can have positive mental effects with this or bad effects. Number two would be jarrow brand D – limonene, which it actually says on the back of the bottle is used in genetic liver phase 2 pathway issues as well as general gut disturbances such as Gerd.

So if you get the D- limonene and it helps then you know it’s due to a faulty genetic pathway.

When I went to the ER for other issues associated with undiagnosed Lyme, they found my liver enzymes to be off the charts high. they called it 'antibiotic caused hepatitis' though I now think it was actually lyme or Bartonella. I was not jaundiced though. For me they took me off Augmentin, which they thought caused it, my liver levels went down. A few months later once I was diagnosed with Lyme they put me on doxy/mino and they didn't go back up. So it seems like with lyme the body gets sensitive to certain antibiotics.

Definitely. For me, I believe it was Babesia that caused mine to be sky high. They've come back down some, but still out of range. Most likely due to inflammation.
