Hey guys I just had some questions on milk thistle and your experiences with it. I've done some searches and such I just thought I'd ask if anyone is using it right now as well.

I'm naturally trying to keep my liver in a good state of being so I've read about milk thistle. Does it protect against toxins from medications and die off? I've been using taurine recently, but I've learned that it'll actually be a bad idea to use it while taking the rifampin as it enhances induction of CYP3A4 so I don't want to mess around with that.

Whats the whole deal with silymarin and what range are doses supposed to be around?

A lot of people seem to be fans of Tudca. I just started, reviews on amazon are great a lot of people claiming it normalized liver enzymes after gallbladder surgery so I went w that.

But I agree completely a properly functioning billary system is something most lyme suffers don’t have and is overlooked as an impediment to their getting better

I take 1000 mg a day and when I was on antibiotics I also took Liv52 by Himalaya as more liver support. Liv52 was added by my doctor when my liver enzymes went up and with the Liv52 they went back down to normal. I got it through Amazon.

I took Milk Thistle extract....but when my liver enzymes rose (with my previous LLND) - while on lyme only treatment, my LLND told me to take Pekana Apo-Hepat. (I also stopped abx for 2 1/2 months)
My liver enzymes stabilized. But who knows - maybe they would have just by stopping the antibiotics.

Now I'm taking Milk Thistle - when I remember - inconsistently...and liver enzymes are good.

In fact - I was diagnosed (as a teen) with 'Gilbert's Syndrome' because I had high bilirubin on repeated blood work.

Now I don't have high bilirubin. It's likely I had lyme/bart a long time prior to diagnosis. (ie and it was responsible for my high bilirubin as a teen.

My liver enzymes are good now...

What was the lyme only treatment?

I'm a bit anxious about the rifampin but my liver was doing really well before the disulfiram and afterwards too. I'm sure I'll be fine. I can probably get a test done next month. Just don't wanna add liver damage to the list of things that grieve me.

Disc. amox,added Ceftin Nov. 20th.;

Reg dr gave me doxy when I was first diagnosed. Then I went to a ND and got azithromycin.
Then a LLND prescribed amoxicillin and a month later added Biaxin.
Two months later LLND replaced Amoxy with Ceftin (still on Biaxin)
Another month later disc Biaxin and stayed on Ceftin with Tinidazole pulsed.

NAC is another one that is good for the liver. My LLPA recommended that, and I've been taking 600mg 2x day. I also take Milk Thistle, most days at 1400-1700mg per day. I take these on my days off ABX. I don't think you want to take either of these close to ABX. My PA wanted the Milk Thistle on off-ABX days, and the NAC at least 2 hours apart from ABX.

I take milk thistle (900 mg 3x a day) along with taurine and TUDCA for liver support. Buhner calls it a food grade herb and in his babesia protocol, suggests 600-1200 mg 3x daily. This is for the standardized 80% silymarin.

I think milk thistle is fine with Rifampin.

It doesn’t always work with supplements - but it accepted milk thistle and it didn’t show any interaction with Rifampin

I'm still on disulfiram with just a few supportive herbs and supplements. Prior to this I relied on herbs for a long time.

I'm not on Rifampin at this time but did take Rifampin with Milk Thistle in the past (when with a different doctor).

My current LLPA has in her Detox sheets regarding Milk Thistle "DO NOT USE Silymarin/Milk Thistle herb within 4 hours of taking any medications. It can speed up or slow down many drug's metabolism."

She has told me to only take Milk Thistle on my off-ABX days. I think she wants to make sure the ABX are not interfered with.

Cignet, I've noticed good things with L-Glycine. They say this is a good way for the liver to build up glutathione. Better than NAC.
