Whats really crazy is that the 170k deaths is almost certainly under estimate.

We are now seeing more than 210,000 deaths than normal for this year, and only 170k of those are officially covid. This means that is likely covid numbers are actually higher than official estimates.

Many students and teachers are required to be tested before returning to school, so I don't know if that has anything to do with current "outbreaks". You need more details to know what is really happening.

For instance, regarding the Mississippi article, it was said that it doesn't mean the students caught it at school. Was said they most likely caught it elsewhere and brought it with them to school.

It would be nice to know how many of these cases are asymptomatic. Not sure how accurate the tests are either. Ohio governor tested positive with antigen test, then about 10 hours later, tested negative at least twice with PCR test.

Lapis_29, I question your info regarding Covid being third leading cause of death in US. It sounds like the news is taking what one former director of CDC says to base their "facts" on. This article uses "on track to become" and "would be". This article was August 3.

Following CDC chart shows Emergency Dept visits continuing to decline. If deaths are not declining now, it seems they soon will be. We should know by now not to trust predictions.

REally simple. Just go to the CDC website and look at the leading causes of death.

That CDC leading cause of deaths was for 2017.

Some other things to consider. Heart disease kills about 647,000 each year and about 600,000 people are estimated to die from cancer this year. When they say Covid might become third leading cause of death, it may mean that Covid deaths may top let's say accidental deaths for that day or that week (perhaps comparing to previous year's accidental deaths).

There were claims of Covid being the leading cause of death and the third leading cause of death back in April and May.

Also, when numbers are reported, it doesn't always mean they were all from that day or that week. Some reported death numbers included an accumulation of deaths from the prior two weeks to two months or so.

The info you posted from CDC was numbers for 2017. You can't compare our current Covid death count to numbers from 2017. That's misleading. Perhaps whoever is making the claim about third leading cause of death should reveal what numbers they're comparing the Covid deaths to. Are they comparing them to current numbers of accidental deaths, cancer, etc. for this year? Are they comparing us to 2019 or are they comparing us to 2017?

I've looked at multiple articles, and it looks like they're all going by what one former director of the CDC said.

If Covid is currently third leading cause of death, it certainly could change by end of year if accidental (or some other) deaths surpass it.
